Probably the most famous novel set in Mauritius is Paul et Virginie rougaille , a Mediterranean dish of tomatoes, onions, garlic and any kind of meat or fish, and daube , an octopus stew. Favorite local beverages includes lassi , a refreshing yogurt and ice-water drink, and alouda , a syrupy brew of agar, milk and flavourings that's available everywhere from streetside vendors. Locally produced beer and rum are potent, plentiful and cheap; wines are expensive and usually imported from France or South Africa.

http://www.aloha.com/~craven/mauritius/mruculture.html
Culture in Mauritius
While many countries claim they are cosmopolitan, only a few really qualify. Mauritius is one of the rare authentically cosmopolitan societies. Where else could so many towns and villages boast of a catholic church, a Muslim mosque, and a Hindu temple within walking distance from each other? And if you are lucky, you might even find a Chinese pagoda in the vicinity! One little-known cemetery at Bambous hosts a burial ground with a Muslim and a ... Jewish section!!
A little history helps explain this peculiar mix: While there is some speculation that the island may have been known to Arab traders plying Indian Ocean trade routes in the 10th - 13th centuries, the remarkably large, lushly vegetated and completely uninhabited island was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, and subsequently settled by the Dutch. The French took over the island in 1715 from the Dutch settlers, who are remembered primarily for having eaten the island's infamous population of flightless DODO BIRDS (which were native only to Mauritius) down to the very last. The French brought over slaves from Africa (particularly from Senegal, Guinea, Mozambique and Madagascar) to work in the sugar-cane plantations. The Mauritian Creole language, now in quasi-universal use in the island, probably evolved during those years as some sort of lingua franca between slaves and masters.
The British became very interested in the island in the early eighteenth century because it provided the perfect transit for ships en route to India. They eventually won the island over from the French in 1810. British rule was essentially administrative and the French colonials were allowed to stay. Things did not change much for the unfortunate African slaves, until yielding to the pressure of abolitionists, the colonists emancipated them in the 1830s-40s. To make up for this sudden labor shortage, the British brought indentured laborers from India (mainly Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat) to the island. Within a few decades, people of Indian origin comprised the majority population of the island.

Republic of Mauritius
Abstract: 1. Introduction The Republic of Mauritius is a 2000 square kilometre island situated to the east coast of Madagascar. It has a per capita income of approximately US$ 3,000 and its major income comes from sugar, textiles and tourism. Despite its geographic location and its lack of natural resources, the country has successfully moved from an agricultural based economy to an agriculture/industry based economy due to its cheap labour force. However, the country can no longer provide such inexpensive labour and there is a need to move up-market by producing value added goods and services. In this context, it is vital for Mauritius to harness the use of telematics/Information Technology(IT) in order to remain competitive on the global market especially with the coming up of the GATT accord. There is very little understanding of the success factors of telematics in developing countries. Poor infrastructure, limited foreign exchange, lack of skilled personnel and little or no management commitment are believed to be some of the key factors that limit the proper use of IT. There is a strong belief that telematics can help in bridging the gap between the poor and rich nations by making the former 'leapfrog' both economic and social development. Yet, many developing countries, especially African states, have failed in exploiting the benefits of IT and there is evidence of underutilisation of IT equipment as well as failure of major IT projects [1, 2].

Maps can be practically applied to innumerable areas of human study and endeavor and have been throughout history. Maps are the most essential navigational instruments that are used when travelling, ensuring that the proper route has been taken and aiding in accurately determining the location of travelers. Photographs, since their introduction in the mid-19th Century, have been the most effective means of capturing images of people and their surroundings. Travelers often take photographs of the landscapes and the peoples of the areas that they visit. Below are links to sites that provide map and photography information about Africa.

Mauritius Culture
Beneath the natural beauties of Mauritius's landscape, lies another, but sometime forgotten, gem: the Mauritian Culture, better yet, cultures. Going to its discovery can be a journey into some of the most fascinating and refined thousands year old ancestral traditions. It would be too simple to classify Mauritius as having one culture as so many unique and distinctive parts forms this whole. It is made up of the different customs and traditions of those who, during the last 400 years, have settled on these shores. Here Europe meets India, China, Africa and so on. Who would imagine that such unique and diversified customs thrives on such a small place? This rich diversity is found in every aspect of the Mauritian life. Churches can be found next to a mosque, Indian temples next to Chinese pagodas. Various Indian believes, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim festivals are celebrated with much fervour and devotion all year round by the different communities. Some of these celebrations can be quite spectacular like the fire-walking ceremony that is performed on the Cavadee day. Another proof of this rich diversity is in the variety of Mauritian dishes (cuisine). There are traditional western dishes coming from the colonial past of the island; alongside someone can discover delicate new taste and aromas of the more exotic, oriental dishes brought by the Indian and Chinese migrants. Some are unique to Mauritius, as various delicacies have also been adapted to suit the Mauritian taste, which combines the flavours of the East and finest of the West.
