Ancient Apocalypse: The Fall of the Mayan Civilisation By Jessica Cecil 1 of 4 Mayan ruins Massive drought Conclusive proof Go further ... Printable version The glory days of the Mayan civilisation Mayan ruins The Mayan ruins of Tikal are hidden deep in the rainforests of Guatemala. From the air only a handful of temples and palaces peek through the canopy. The stone carvings are weather-beaten. Huge plazas are covered in moss and giant reservoirs are engulfed by jungle. The only inhabitants are wild animals and birds. But 1,200 years ago, Tikal was one of the major cities of the vast and magnificent Maya civilisation that stretched across much of what is now southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Tikal was home to perhaps 100,000 people. Thatched farmsteads and fields would have stretched as far as the eye could see. The Maya were so stable and established they even had a word for a 400-year time period. The Maya thrived for nearly 2,000 years. Without the use of the cartwheel or metal tools, they built massive stone structures. They were accomplished scientists. They tracked a solar year of 365 days and one of the few surviving ancient Maya books contains tables of eclipses. From observatories, like the one at Chichen Itza, they tracked the progress of the war star, Venus.

THE ANCIENT MAYA
The story of the Maya begins during the Fourth Ice Age about 60,000 years ago. At this time the earth's ice caps were much larger than today, glaciers extended as far south as the central United States and no tropical climate existed anywhere on our planet. The so-called tropics were covered with savannah and grassland. So much water was trapped in the ice caps that the level of the sea was lower than today and a land bridge about 1000 miles wide connecting Asia and North America at the Bering Strait was exposed. The first humans to inhabit the Americas came across this land bridge. At first, travel south was impeded by vast walls of ice but gradually, as the ice melted, people began to spread south. It is believed the first humans reached Central America about 15,000 years ago. The first identifiable culture, Clovis, existed around 10,000 BC. Some stone tools dating back to 9,000 BC have been found in Guatemala. Around this time, the Fourth Ice Age was drawing to a close and the climate was gradually warming up enabling humans to begin eating more plants and less meat. This change was underway around 8,000 BC. From 8,000 BC to 2,000 BC the inhabitants of Central America gradually became more agrarian and they domesticated beans, corn, peppers, squash and other plants. During this time there was still no jungle, just savannah and grassland and some trees. Evidence indicates that a tropical jungle climate appeared in Central America only quite recently, after the Mayan civilization was well underway. Towards the end of this period, some recognizably Mayan villages appeared and pottery and ceramics appeared. Some villages had a temple.

Students will understand the following:
The relationships between Maya city-states during the classical period What archaeologists can teach us about an ancient civilization For this lesson, you will need: pens, pencils, and markers scissors paper paints, glue, and tape books and magazine articles about the Maya classical period atlas encyclopedias computer with Internet access video equipment (optional) publishing software (optional) Explain to students that they will explore the ancient civilization of the Maya during the classical period, from A.D. 300 to A.D. 900. This time in Maya civilization was marked by the growth of city-states and by imperial wars between them. Students will then prepare news reports about major events of this period. Events might include a great war planned for a special astronomical date or the capture of a rival king and his city-state. Explain to students that their news reports may be in the form of a magazine article, with sidebars providing background information; a major newspaper story; or an editorial. Students may also wish to videotape a presentation in the style of a prime-time television news show. Although students are reporting on historical events, they should strive to give their news stories a present-day immediacy.
