Biography

William McKinley, the 25th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1897-1901), elected when the prestige and influence of the presidency was low, restored and expanded the power and authority of his office. In the aftermath of the Spanish-American War he was the first chief executive to confront the responsibilities of world power in Latin America and Asia. Early Life William McKinley was born on Jan. 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio, the seventh child of William and Nancy McKinley. He spent his early years in Poland, Ohio, and briefly attended Allegheny College. At the start of the Civil War he enlisted as a private in the 23d Ohio Volunteers under the command of Rutherford B. HAYES . McKinley served at Antietam and in the Shenandoah Valley, leaving the Army with the brevet rank of major, a title that he retained throughout his political career. After his admission to the bar he opened (1867) a law office in Canton, Ohio, and became prosecuting attorney of Stark County two years later. McKinley married Ida Saxton on Jan. 25, 1871. The tragic deaths (1873, 1875) of their two young children left Ida McKinley an invalid whose illness made great demands on her husband's time and affection. Perennial duties of caring for her reinforced his natural patience and helped to create the calm, benign political manner that brought him success. Political Career McKinley ran for CONGRESS as a REPUBLICAN in 1876 and for the next 14 years, with one short interruption, sat in the

Best Sellers John Adams by David McCullough Left to his own devices, John Adams might have lived out his days as a Massachusetts country lawyer, devoted to his family and friends. As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation. Overshadowed by the lustrous presidents Washington and Jefferson, who bracketed his tenure in office, Adams emerges from McCullough's brilliant biography as a truly heroic figurenot only for his significant role in the American Revolution but also for maintaining his personal integrity in its strife-filled aftermath. McCullough spends much of his narrative examining the troubled friendship between Adams and Jefferson, who had in common a love for books and ideas but differed on almost every other imaginable point. Reading his pages, it is easy to imagine the two as alter egos. (Strangely, both died on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.) But McCullough also considers Adams in his own light, and the portrait that emerges is altogether fascinating.

William McKinley (1843-1901), an American statesman, 25th President of the United States, born at Niles, Ohio, January 29, 1843. When he was two years old his parents moved to Poland, Ohio, and he received his early education at the Poland Seminary. In 1860 he entered Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, but ill health compelled him to discontinue his studies in the first year. After teaching school for a short period, he enlisted, in June, 1861, in the Twenty-third Ohio Infantry, under command of Colonel (subsequently General) W.S. Rosecrans, and served through the war, gaining the rank of brevet major for gallantry at Antietam, Opequon Creek and Cedar Creek. At the close of the war, 1865, he returned to Poland, began the study of law, and after a year in the Albany Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1867. McKinley was reelected in 1900 with increased majorities, receiving 292 of the 477 electoral votes. He had won a place in the hearts of many of his supporters as one of the most beloved of American statesmen; his second term had had an auspicious beginning, and his foreign and domestic policies were received with favor. On Sept. 6, 1901, while holding a public reception at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, he was shot and fatally wounded by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. He died September 14, succeeded in office by Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt.

illiam McKinley , twenty-fifth president of the United States. The first McKinley to arrive in this country was James, who emigrated from Ireland early in the eighteenth century and remained in York County, where he grew to manhood and was married. In politics James McKinley was a Whig. Among his children was David McKinley, who was born May 16, 1755. David McKinley was a carpenter by trade, served in the Revolutionary War, and during the closing years of his life drew a pension for wounds received in the service of his country. He was married to Hannah C. Rose and is remembered as a highly educated and polished gentleman of the old school who was a teacher for many years, and was familiar with several languages. In religion he was a strict Presbyterian, and in politics a Democrat of the Jeffersonian school. David died in Crawford County, Ohio, in 1840. His second son being James McKinley. James McKinley was a remarkable man in many respects, and, like his father, was a carpenter by trade and engaged in fighting England, he having served in the War of 1812 under General William Henry Harrison, participating in the battle of Tippecanoe. He married Hannah McCreary and they lived in North Bucyrus, Ohio until relocating to Chatfield while son William, father of the President, remained in Columbiana County. In 1844, James sold his Chatfield farm and bought another, but ultimately moved to South Bend, Indiana. The country about South Bend was then very swampy, new and full of malaria. James and Hannah were both stricken with malaria shortly after arriving, and died on the same day in 1847, on the fortieth anniversary of their marriage.
