Fundamentals of Mechanics of Materials
This course provides a basic introduction to the following basic concepts:
  • Stress: a means for quantifying internal force intensity Strain: a means for quantifying intensity of deformation Constitutive Behavior: relating stress and strain in terms of material behavior
We also will consider the following basic applications of these concepts:
  • Axial loading (implicit in our basic consideration of stress and strain) Pressure vessels (useful but simple application that leads to interesting states of stress) Torsion: stress and deformations caused by twisting of shafts Bending: stress and deformations caused by bending Fundamentals of indeterminate analysis: an introduction to the analysis of systems that are statically indeterminate

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
General Outline
The book deals with:
  • analytical methods mathematical model of physical problem assumptions wrt physical problem value of simplified models limitations of simplified models importance of testing fundamental principles vs. empirical methods
This book is concerned with the development of analytical methods for solving problems in mechanics of materials that are generally considered beyond the scope of basic courses in the discipline. As such, the developments tend to evolve from fundamental principles such as equilibrium and conservation of energy. In analyzing a particular physical problem, the analyst must develop a mathematical model that describes the problem. The mathematical model consists of equations that are solved to obtain formulas predicting the behavior of the mathematical model. It is imperative to keep in mind that what is being analyzed is a model of the physical problem rather than the physical problem itself. This is, perhaps, a subtle distinction but it is of paramount importance. Thus, how well the results of the analysis predict the behavior of the physical problem depends on how well the mathematical model represents the physical problem at hand.

EM364A mechanics of materials. Scope This course is designed for those studentswho are enrolled in an ABET accredited program requiring EM364A.
http://www.dean.usma.edu/cme/courses/em364a.htm
EM364A MECHANICS OF MATERIALS
Scope:
This course is designed for those students who are enrolled in an ABET accredited program requiring EM364A. The course studies the behavior of deformable bodies under axial, torsional, flexural, and combined loading. The concepts of stress, strain, and material properties are introduced and are used to relate external forces applied to a body to the resulting internal forces and deformations so that performance can be evaluated. Practical applications involving the design and adequacy of mechanical and structural elements under various loading conditions are emphasized.
Goals:
The goal of the Mechanics of Materials course is to teach the student the techniques of design and analysis of structural members for engineering applications. The course also seeks to use stress, strain, and deformation theories to link statics with structural analysis. Communication, writing skills, and use of the computer are enhanced through the preparation of lab and design problem reports.

Materials and Their Properties

An important part of the study of mechanics of materials involves the use of experimental methods to classify and quantify the behavioural characteristics that a specific material holds. A good understanding of the nature of any materials which are to be used in any industry is fundamental in the field of engineering.
Civil engineers must be able to relate the response in a material to any loads to which it is subjected since they must take such relationships into consideration every time they design structures, whether large or small.
Beams and shafts are important structural members which are used in the construction of buildings and other engineering structures which demand high levels of resistance to stress caused by bending (Hibbeler, 1997).
Wood is a moderately ductile material that is used commonly in beam or shaft forms, for various purposes relating to the maintenance of structural stability. Hence, the way in which different types of material behave in response to an applied transverse load would prove to be a valuable resource for all individuals in the construction industry.
