HOME Media Relations and Communications NYSUT poll: teaching changed after September 11th, teachers concerned about lingering effects of attacks on students
September 3, 2002 ALBANY, N.Y. September 3, 2002 The September 11th attack on America not only made history, but significantly changed the way New York's social studies teachers taught history last year - and plan to teach it in the future, according to a survey released today by New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). And, as the one year anniversary of September 11th approaches, New York's teachers also express concern that many children across the state - but especially students in New York City and its surrounding suburbs will show lingering signs of stress as they head back to school this week. NYSUT President Thomas Y. Hobart Jr. said New York's teachers rose to the occasion in the days following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. "New York's teachers did what good teachers do," Hobart said. "They adapted their curriculum to help students understand this tragic, yet historic day in our nation's history and put it in the proper context. And, it's clear now that teachers used their skills to help children understand the dangers of terrorism and to see that all stereotyping - and especially the stereotyping of all Muslims as terrorists - is wrong and against what America stands for." Hobart said the survey findings suggest that the events of September 11 will be taught forever.

Media Literacy: Media literacy is the ability to critically question, analyze and synthesize media-based information. There is no way to prevent children from being exposed to media messages, therefore, the only answer is to teach children how to deconstruct those media messages. At OTC, we are especially interested in how we can help teachers transfer media literacy techniques and awareness to their young charges. Lesson Plans to Caution Chicago Teens about Risks of Internet Fraud
High school teachers to get plans developed by Loyola, city on Nov. 16
CHICAGO (Nov. 8, 2002) - Teen-agers no longer need to ask their parents for a ride to the mall to go shopping. Today they can do their browsing and buying over the Internet. But educators at Loyola University Chicago and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) fear that teen-agers are surfing the Net unaware of the risks posed by online shopping. Many online shoppers, adults and teens alike, unwittingly sacrifice personal information each time they log on to the Internet, information that often gets passed on to third-party vendors and, worse yet, to schemers whose only desire is either to defraud Internet surfers or to steal personal information like Social Security and credit card numbers. "As one of the world's premier communications companies, AT&T is proud to support this project because we believe the Internet represents a powerful tool to enhance teaching and learning for families, schools and communities when used effectively," said Michael Scott, Vice President of Local Government Affairs for AT&T Broadband and President of the Chicago Board of Education. "By working with the Chicago Public Schools, this project will help ensure our students have the information they need to safely use the Internet."

    Communications Coordination
by Steven C. Davis and Andrew D. Gilman Crisis communications can be defined as managing how a company provides information to others—internally and externally—during a critical event. Today, wide-ranging threats—to executives or facilities, product or reputation, share price or business strategy—can constitute a crisis, real or perceived. Once a crisis has been identified, the communications process involves: (1) identifying the key groups that will potentially be affected by the event and developing appropriate messages; (2) selecting spokespeople; and (3) managing the timing and distribution of information. These efforts are usually spearheaded by senior leaders, bringing together corporate communications (often with guidance from an external public relations firm), investor relations, legal, finance, information technology, facilities management and risk management. Communicating effectively with employees, customers, vendors, shareholders (for a public company) and any other stakeholders, as well as the media, can help an organization deescalate a crisis situation. Basics
Crisis communications, like crises themselves, occurs in three stages—before, during and after.
