Course Outline:
This Honours course is available to both Science and Medical undergraduates, and is held in Medical Microbiology, Teviot Place. The academic teaching staff involved have special interests in bacteriology immunology and virology as basic sciences and as applied to medicine. Most of the first term is a core course on the molecular and biological basis of the pathogenesis of infectious disease for the class as a whole. During the term there are practical exercises, seminars and tutorials in smaller groups. This is followed in the second term by a choice of short in-depth studies of selected topics of importance in microbial immunity, including bacteria, viruses and eukaryotic parasites. By linking the selection of Term 2 topics to a particular project, some specialisation is possible.

UCAS code: CC59 Stage 1 of the programme enables you to study a broad range of modules covering cell biology, biomolecules, microbiology, infection and immunology, biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology and physiology. Stage 1 is common with those degree programmes available in the areas of biochemistry and genetics, biological and biomedical sciences, pharmacology, and physiological sciences, and it may be possible to change onto one of these programmes at the end of Stage 1. In the following year at Stage 2, you concentrate exclusively on the subject of microbiology and study cell biology of microbes, viruses, immunology and microbial disease. Assistance is given in finding a four-week work experience placement during the summer vacation period at the end of this Stage. In Stage 3 you combine the study of our immune systems with that of microbial disease. Stage 3 involves a research project, on a subject of your choice, which accounts for a third of your time and includes a dissertation. You also take an optional module, which may be in a microbiology-related subject, or taken from another subject offered by the University, for example management. Teaching is by a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical work. Assessment is by a mix of continuous assessment, examinations and a dissertation.

http://www.usc.edu.au/faculty/science/strands/special/med_micr.htm
Bachelor of Science - Specialisation Strands Biomechanics Biotechnology Environmental Management Environmental Microbiology ... Rehabilitation Medical Microbiology and Immunology Strand The Medical Microbiology and Immunology Strand examines the occurrence and distribution of disease-causing microbes with an emphasis on host-microbe interaction. The strand analyses the body's defence mechanisms against invading microorganisms and examines how pathogens avoid host immune defences. The strand also focuses on common agents of human disease and their pathogenic mechanisms and describes common methods of identifying disease-causing microorganisms. Some current issues in infectious diseases including surveillance and monitoring systems and effective preventive strategies for the emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases will also be covered. The strand will conclude by examining the molecular aspects of microbial pathogenesis, which includes a small practical project in order to promote student's capability to conduct a research within the areas of infectious disease. Immunology (MEP254)
Pathogens and Disease (MEP252)

The course Pathogens and Disease is the second competency-based course in the Medical Microbiology and Immunology Strand. The course is designed to introduce the relationships that exist between microbes and our lives. This relationship involves not only the familiar harmful effects of certain microorganisms, such as causing disease but also the many beneficial effects. The course also introduces the common causes of infectious diseases and describes common mechanisms of pathogenicity and identification of disease causing microorganisms. This course also introduces the mechanism of action of antimicrobial agents on bacterial cells and examines the major attributes of microbial pathogens and factors, which result in infectious process.

One course is for high school teachers and the other for high school students. The major purposes of this program are to:
    • Provide a way for biology teachers to refresh their knowledge of medical microbiology and learn ways of making microbiology more meaningful and interesting to students. Encourage scientific inquiry in high school students. Develop partnerships and collaborations with the medical school faculty that will lead to cooperative, on-going research studies.

    http://www.bmb.leeds.ac.uk/mbiology/legacy/fullproj/pro_mmw.htm
Medical Microbiology on the World Wide Web
The sites in this section are the result of searches conducted using the search string ‘medical microbiology’. The twelve sites chosen for evaluation were not intended to be all-inclusive, but rather to be representative of the pool of Medical Microbiology information.
Evaluation of General Medical Microbiology Sites. . .
Most of these sites consist of a selection of Microbiology topics to choose from. In my opinion the best sites were those that combined comprehensive information with good graphical illustrations. For example, the Microbiology 101 Home Page from Washington State University scored a perfect 10 for using the Web’s potential to present microbiology as stimulating subject with excellent use of graphics. Unfortunately the Web’s capacity for visual display is underused by most sites. Only 7 out of 12 sites supplied useful diagrams.
