The Norman Kings enfeoffed sheriff who served as the local representative of the king. Henry I, however, turned his court into an administrative bureaucracy by creating special offices. These court offices would each serve a limited and specialized set of functions so that the office-holders would themselve become efficient administrators in that one area. Most significantly, one of these specialized offices was the Exchequer , which oversaw the acquisition and dispersal of revenues for the crown. Henry II church grand jury . He also introduced the original form of jury trials. In Henry's time, jury trials were only applied to civil cases involving property. When someone made a complaint of dispossession, the sheriff was empowered to bring before the judge twelve men who were familiar with the case. These men would then tell the judge what they knew of the case and would give their opinion as to the truth of the complaint or the defense. This twelve man testimonial would eventually develop into the civil and criminal jury trial.

While Arthur was a historical figure, he may not necessarily a king. In fact, it is difficult to trace exactly who the real Arthur was. Many scholars today believe he may have been a brilliant military general whose prominence earned him a respected title among royalty. By some accounts, he became somewhat dull in his older age and allowed his advisors to manipulate him and his wife to betray him. POLITICS AND WORLD EVENTS DURING THE MEDIEVAL ERA The eastern half of the former Roman empire, called Byzantium, emerged unscathed from the invasions and wars of the fifth century. Emperor Justinian, whose reign lasted from 527-565, was perhaps the most prominent figure of his time. Justinian reconquered the western countries of Italy, North Africa and southern Spain, and in 555, codified Roman law in Corpus Juris Civilis. By 600, Byzantium was the wealthiest, most powerful and civilized city in Europe. Although Arab invasion after 632 stripped the empire of its outlying provinces, Byzantine recovered even to the point of imposing its culture and religion upon neighboring Slavs and visiting Vikings. its capital Constantinople was the formidable center of power of the Byzantine empire. Meanwhile, Rome rose to prominence as the capital of the Western half of the former Roman empire. This Western counterpart to Byzantium was later known as the Holy Roman Empire.

Almost all the aristocrats in England chose sides. One side was the Lancaster side, which took a red rose as its symbol. The other side was the York side, which took a white rose as its symbol. Both sides were descended from King Edward III , and so both thought their guy should be king. At the end of the war in 1485, a new family of kings took control, the Tudor (TOO-door) family, with King Henry VII . Henry VII was a very strong king, and he weakened the aristocracy so that he could stay in power. He made Parliament stronger, but not the aristocratic parliament. Great events happened during the fourteenth century, not the least of which such great battles as Crecy (where the English system of Archery proved so effective against the might of the French Aristorcracy) and Sluys (where the English inventiveness at Sea proved a unique, at that time, use of naval warfare). It was also, though, a period of much change, The Black Death, the invention of the Spinning Jenny and Education as we know it to this day. The Paladins of Chivalry cover the period of the mid to late, Fourteenth century from the beginning of the reign of Edward III to the end of the reign of Henry V (1327 - 1422). This was a period that saw innovation in costume, armour, warfare, religion and politics. It was the time of the Hundred Year's War, which included the great battles of Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt and also encompasses a period when England was at war with Scotland and Wales and the revolt of the peasants in 1381, against crippling taxes to pay for the wars
