Civilization is a triumph of mind over matter, of reason over instinct and of the distinctly human over human kind's animal nature. These are what have made possible civilization, as well as culture, its constant and necessary companion. A thorough understanding of what civilization and culture are requires a knowledge of all the qualities that make up human nature and a full understanding of all historical developments. Mesopotamia was approximately 300 miles long and 150 miles wide. It was located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. These rivers flow into the Persian Gulf. The word Mesopotamia means "The land between the rivers". Activity: Find a map and see if you can locate Mesopotamia. 2) WHAT WAS MESOPOTAMIA LIKE?
    CLIMATE
The climate for the region ranged from seasons of cool to hot seasons with temperatures often over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Mesopotamia experienced moderate rainfall. ENVIRONMENT
Most of Mesopotamia was located in the present day country of Iraq. The land of Mesopotamia was once dominated by floods, but today is mostly desert. The seasonal flooding was a challenge to the farmers of Mesopotamia. These farmers learned to control the flooding to some degree. The fertile land along the rivers produced such crops as wheat, barley, sesame, flax, and various fruits and vegetables. The land that was once marshes and channels that provided food, protection, and life to the people there, no longer exists.

"I wish I were too. I read it a little as a duty, but it tells me nothing that does not either vex or weary me. The quarrels of popes and kings, with wars or pestilences, in every page; the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all it is very tiresome:"
    Catherine Morland, in Northhangar Abbey
by Jane Austen How are historians to remedy the silence about women in many traditional accounts of history? This question has received a number of distinct answers. The first solution was to locate the great women of the past, following the lead of much popular historiography that focuses on "great men". The problem here is that just as the "great men" approach to history sidelines and ignores the lives of the mass of people, focusing on great women merely replicates the exclusionary historical approaches of the past. The next solution was to examine and expose the history of oppression of women. This approach had the merit of addressing the life histories of the mass of women, but, since it has proved to be possible to find some degree of oppression everywhere, it tended to make women merely subjects of forces that they could not control. On the other hand, historians' focus on oppression revealed that investigating the

Mesopotamia can be divided into North and South throughout much of its early history- The Northern region is sometimes (albeit problematically anachronistic) called Assyria while the southern region is called Babylonia after the major powers that accrued in those areas- dating is highly problematic for the period before 2400.

Early settlers would have been adequately supported by the rich wildlife and natural vegetation of southern Mesopotamia. Settlers would have cultivated the soil to grow wheat, barley, dates and vegetables, and raised cattle. By 4,000BC the people were building walled towns with mudbrick houses and temples at the centre. They were also beginning to trade with neighbouring towns and countries. Over the next 500 years, trade grew and more of the population became involved in specialised crafts. This led to the growth of larger and more complex towns, and finally to the settlement in the first city, Ur, in 3,500BC. This city was also known as the 'City of Abraham' in the Old Testament (Genesis 11:31). Between 3,500BC and 2,000BC, the southern region of Mesopotamia was dominated by the Sumerians, and the following details tell of their beliefs, achievements and way of life.
HISTORY The Sumerians were the dominant civilisation of the ancient Middle East from 3,500BC. Unfortunately for the Sumerians, the area was conquered by King Sargon of Akkad, but eventually, the Babylonian society became the dominating influence of the Middle East, in 2,000BC, when Sumerian domination finally came to an end. King Hammurabi, who brought the Babylonian Empire to it's peak, reigned between 1,800BC to 1,760BC, turned the legal system around. The old Sumerian laws were turned into an elaborate and just legal system. This was known as the
