PLACES TO HUNT

Good Places To Hunt: parks ball fields const. sites depots fair grounds camping areas old picnic areas lawns schools churches old fishing spots swimming holes sledding areas ski slopes sand pits sidewalk construction fence rows creek beds RR Tracks club houses under bridges lovers lanes old movie theatres demolition sites under deer stands bus stations under park benches around old trees rock parking lots Click 4 More TIP OF THE WEEK - My suggested tip of the week is this...When hunting old parks take a good look at the lay of the land. A big open area at one time may have had shade trees that people used to picnic under or just relax and read...this would be a good place to search for lost coins. Look for big shallow depressions in the ground that may indicate a large tree may have once stood there and been removed later after dying or being struck by lightning....I have found many interesting and valuable coins to add to my collection this way..good luck and happy hunting...Dave Savage

R
iver mining is a branch of placer mining that is carried on in the channels and beds of rivers and large streams. Practically it may be considered as including the mining of such deep bars as have to be exploited below the surface of the water in the adjacent river. River mining is not local to California, though undoubtedly carried on to a greater extent here than in any other gold-bearing district in the world. As contrasted with gulch and ravine mining and hydraulic mining, it is dry season work, only practicable when the rivers are in their low water stages. Probably no other branch of our gold mining industry is subject to more uncertainty under ordinary conditions than is river mining, yet in no other branch are as large returns possible with comparatively small capital. In the early mining history of California More...

About Me And Metal Detecting
My name is Phil Harvey and I have now been metal detecting for just over 4 years, from which I have got great satisfaction. My first machine was a Micronta 4001. As some of you may know the Micronta 4001 is quite an old machine, with it's 4" search head and slight discriminating abilities. However, after much patience and practice I was finding interesting bits and pieces. I was finding artefacts and coins as old as medieval on a regular basis. My best find at the time being a 14th century French jetton. During this time I started reading "Treasure Hunting" and learned valuable information from each issue. I started to research and found out information about all of my sites. This ranged from old track ways and footpaths, to a Tudor house that had once stood in a field close to my house.
I was hooked to the hobby and I had soon upgraded my metal detector to the Viking 5. This was an amazing machine compared to the Micronta. The depth that I was getting with it was tremendous compared to my last machine. With this detector I found my first hammered silver coin and also my first roman. The hammered coin was bent and black through stubble burning, but I didn't care! I had found a coin in just less than 6 months that it takes some people to find after years. The roman coin is an AE and is very small measuring 15mm across. Even today I have no idea what it exactly is! My machine was soon upgraded again and is still the detector I use today, this being a CS5MX. This machine is excellent in my opinion. My find rate tripled and it is now no surprise to come back with 3 or more hammered silvers each time I go out. I have found numerous hammered silver coins now and various other artefacts of interest. I hope you enjoy my site and I wish anyone the best of luck when detecting!

Nowadays, metal detectors are hi-tec electronic machines with a variety of capabilities dependant on price. Most are 'user-friendly' being relatively simple to operate and most now have the ability to discriminate against certain metals. Prices range from one hundred pounds to close on a 1000 pounds for a top-of-the-range model. However, on some sites the cheaper detectors will out shine the expensive detectors. For instance if a site is highly iron contaminated, I find that my Viking 5 gives more depth then my CS5MX and many others will probably find this to. I believe that weather you join a club when you first start detecting is up to you. When I started the hobby I had no intention of joining a club and I still don't really. However, some may find it useful because they can then learn from experienced uses of detectors.
The hobby is suitable for all ages, from the very young to the very old. The hobby is actually quite healthy for the body because it gets you out in the air and gives you exercise through walking and digging.
In the UK permission should be gained to search on all land except that provided by local councils for public recreation i.e. parks and such open spaces. Beaches are usually free to search unless it is one of the few privately-owned beaches. However, in some areas such council land is out of bounds. If you are unsure about a piece of land near you, the best thing you can do is check. If someone tells you can't detect on council land, but you now for a fact that no such restrictions apply, I say ignore them! If you wish to search on farmland then the farmer or landowner should be sought out and permission to search requested from him/her.
