Rebecca Fulton Theology 231: Catholicism Professor McBrien December 10, 1996 Catholic and Methodist Religions: Differences Beyond a Common Belief Within the world there are many different religions which hold great amounts of varying beliefs. It is those beliefs that offset the religions from one another. As many people feel that different religions are strictly that, different, they fail to see the similarities. An example of such a case would be between the Catholicism and the Methodist religion. People concentrate on the differences between the religions, while forgetting that the religions share the same underlying belief, the belief in Jesus Christ. Beyond this basic belief, the religions become distinct because of their specific customs and traditions. Some examples of the differences of custom and tradition between the two Churches include the sacraments, especially baptism and the Eucharist, and the hierarchy of each Church. The first example of a distinction between the Catholic and Methodist religions is the number of sacraments and the differing definition of a sacrament. Within Catholicism, a sacrament is defined as 'one of the seven principal liturgical rites of the Church through which participants experience the love and power of God (grace) that flows from Christ's Passion, death, and Resurrection' ( The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism , p.1146). The Catholics believe there are seven sacraments which include the following: Baptism, the Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Penance, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick. The Church teaches that a person experiences grace in two ways. The Spirit becomes established in the person, known as sanctifying grace, and the outcome is indicated by the character of the sacrament itself, known as sacramental grace (Hellwig, p. 146). These sacraments are separated from other aspects of the Church considered to be sacramental. When something is considered sacramental by the Catholic Church, it is considered to cause grace through the person celebrating the sacramental, not through the ceremony itself (McBrien

He was born into slavery; his family was the property of a wealthy Philadelphia lawyer, Benjamin Chew. As a child, Richard Allen and his family were sold to Stockley Sturgis, a plantation owner in Delaware. Apparently, Sturgis was somewhat of a benevolent master, and allowed Allen to learn to read and write. Through his reading, Allen became interested in religion, and again with the permission of Sturgis, he attended local Methodist meetings until other townspeople objected. Sturgis then allowed Methodist meetings on his own plantation and Allen soon found that preaching was his calling, and is said to have influenced Sturgis' own conversion to the Methodist religion. In 1783, Richard Allen purchased his freedom, and moved back to Philadelphia. I n Philadelphia, Richard Allen began preaching the Gospel when he could gather groups of black men and women, and he regularly worshipped in the Methodist church. However, he and other black worshippers faced opposition from some of the established white members of the church. Instead of forcing the issue, Allen left the Methodist congregation and in 1787 he began founding his own congregation where people could worship without restriction and harassment. Allen and his followers created the Free African Society to serve their religious needs. As the free black population of Philadelphia grew, Richard Allen continued to devote his efforts to bringing increasing numbers of black people into the Methodist religion. In 1816 Allen established the African Methodist Episcopal Church. On April 11 of that year Allen was named the church's first bishop.

Religion and the British Methodist Episcopal Church T he church was the most important institution in most Black communities. Church leaders were often spokespersons to the larger community. The denominations were usually Baptist or Methodist. Baptist congregations encouraged a democratic participation by the election of their ministers. Black Methodists, coldly received in White congregations, turned to the African Methodist Episcopal church, which entered the colony from the United States in 1838 and by 1840 had organized an Upper Canada Conference. The Conference was instrumental in supplying the church with ministers and sending bishops occasionally to oversee its work. In 1856, feelings arose that reforms had to take place, and an independent British Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. A British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church was started in Guelph in 1870, in a frame building on Market Street. Rev. Thomas Jefferson was pastor. The original congregation was comprised of former fugitive slaves from the United States. On September 18, 1880, numerous citizens gathered to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the new stone church on Essex Street. T he 1882-83 Guelph City Directory described the church as a "stone building, in course of completion but sufficiently advanced to enable public services to be held in it; when finished it will have a seating capacity of 300. The estimated cost of the building is $2,000". The BME church offered public services at 11 am and 6:30 pm, as well as a Sabbath School at 3 pm. Prayer meetings were held every Thursday and the Rev. Junius B. Roberts presided over the church's 40 members.

The Religious Nature of Scientology GEOFFREY PARRINDER Professor of the Comparitive Study of Religions University of London I must make it clear that I am not a Scientologist, on the contrary I am an ordained Methodist Minister of over forty years standing. I have no brief for the beliefs and practices of Scientology and might be critical of some of them. I know that complaints have been made against some aspects of the practice of Scientology. But I am concerned with religious freedom, which is essential to a democratic society. It seems contrary to religious toleration that the founder of Scientology, Lafayette Ron Hubbard , should be barred from entering the United Kingdom, unless some crime can be proved against him. And it also seems wrong to me that Scientologists should not be allowed to register their places of worship on the grounds indicated above. In 1971 I was approached by representatives of Scientology, since my interest in the meaning of religion was known from my writings and my position as Professor of the Comparative Study of Religions in the University of London. I examined literature sent to me, including the transcript of the proceeding at the Appeal Courts, and I thought it well to gain first hand information by meeting representatives of the movement several times and visiting their British headquarters. Saint Hill Manor, East Grinstead, is an old enlarged building with adequate but not very extensive grounds. My visit had been arranged but, as often happens, I arrived half an hour early and was able to wander round on my own for some time. From rumours about the Scientologists, I half imagined that there would be a guard at the entrance, or even guard dogs, but everything was open and I drove unnoticed into the car park. Then I went into buildings where students were at work, saw class rooms open, and finally entered the chapel which was like many a Free Church building.

Sources for Women's Studies in the Methodist Archives Text by Gareth Lloyd, Methodist Archives Research Assistant To Methodist Archives Main Page `The Mother of Methodism', Susanna Wesley (1670-1742) John Rylands University Library of Manchester, 1996 Introduction The Methodist Archives and Research Centre (MARC) is the official archive repository of the British Methodist Church. It contains the largest collection of Methodist printed books and manuscripts in Europe, and is regarded as one of the world's most important collections of source material relating to evangelical studies. The books and records contained in the Archives document the activities of the Church on a national level from the early eighteenth century to the present. Local records, such as circuit minutes and accounts, are not held at the MARC but are kept locally. Similarly, records of Methodist overseas missions are not kept here, but are on deposit at the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. This guide, while it is not comprehensive, aims to introduce researchers to selected material deposited in the MARC which is relevant to the study of women and the Methodist Church. It is aimed specifically at postgraduate students but will also be of value to the more general user of the collections.
