Southern New Mexico regional history before 1945 Adapted from text prepared at White Sands National Monument White Sands National Monument White Sands National Monument is the world's largest outcropping of pure gypsum. The area is surrounded by the missile range and is about 30 miles northeast of WSMR headquarters. It lies just north US Highway 70 about 15 miles west of Alamogordo, 54 miles east of Las Cruces and slightly less than 100 miles from El Paso. The monument consists of approximately 176,000 acres of pure white gypsum "sand" that shifts continually from one high dune to make another. The glaring white area is almost bare of vegetation. However, many species of plants have adapted to this unusual habitat, and through the gradual extension of roots and stalks, have avoided being buried by the drifting sand. A variety of plants fringe the edge of the park where they grow in weird shapes and forms. Found also in the 275 square-mile tract are several species of reptiles and rodents that have adapted to their strange environment by developing a bleached white protective coloration. As the years pass the moving sand bares relics of the past. Among items brought to the surface in the past was an ancient two-wheel cart believed to be an early Spanish carreta.

Bingo! A shipwreck survivor reported an island ten sailing days north that was populated by Amazons and was rich in gold and pearls. That sounded to Hernan like the fabled island of California ruled by the Amazonian Queen, Califia. He fairly drooled at the thought. " Andale, hombres ", he told his ship builder, " get on with it ". In 1535, with three galleons and a compliment of over 600 men and women, Hernan sailed into a tranquil bay which he promptly named Santa Cruz. It didn't take him long to figure out that there weren't no gold and there weren't no Amazons, neither. He packed up and sailed south for the last time. But there were pearls in the waters around Santa Cruz. Sebastian Vizcaino set up a pearl fishing colony there in 1596 knowing full well that he was certain to become a wealthy man. He found a few pearls, but not enough to support his expedititon; he also found a whole bunch of unsociable Indians. The only thing Sebastian got out of his misguided tour was an excellent chart of the Mar de Cortes. The only thing California got out of Sebastian's misguided greed was a new name for the pearl-less bay: La Paz.

Droughts forced the Anasazi to migrate south and west to fertile river valleys, establishing grand settlements such as the now-abandoned Pecos Pueblo.

Also greatly influencing the early Mexican society were were the Spanish colonists and a significant African population which served colonial leaders as slaves. At least three great civilizations the Mayas, the Olmecs, and the Toltecs preceded the wealthy Aztec empire, conquered in 1519 by the Spanish under Hernando Cortes. This was the first stage in what would be lasting dominion of the Spanish on the history, government and culture of the newly forming country. Important Conquests Changed Early Mexican Society The Spanish assault on the Aztec Empire in 1519 represented the second major stage of Spanish expansion in the Americas. The first stage had established permanent settlements in the Caribbean Sea, including the city of Santo Domingo (now the capital of the Dominican Republic) and outposts on the island of Cuba. These settlements made it possible for the Spaniards to probe the mainland of Mexico and Central America knowing that they could quickly return to their island outposts. In 1518, Governor Velazquez sponsored another expedition, this time under the command of his nephew, Juan de Grijalva. The Spaniards returned to Champoton, where they avenged the defeat of the previous expedition, forcing the Maya to retreat inland after three days of fierce fighting. The expedition continued exploring the Gulf Coast, eventually encountering friendly Mayan-speaking peoples who told the Spaniards of a powerful empire to the west. Although the Spaniards did not realize it, they had reached the outer limits of the Aztec Empire.

It is built on the ruins of the Aztec city of Cortes in 1521. During the colonial period Mexico City served as the capital of the viceroyalty of New Spain and was for a time the cultural and social center of North and South America. It was taken in 1847 by Winfield Scott's American army, after an inland march from Veracruz in the Mexican War . The French army captured Mexico City in 1863, and Emperor Maximilian, crowned in 1864, did much to beautify it before it was recaptured by Mexicans under Benito Villa and Emiliano Zapata . The summer Olympic games were held in Mexico City in 1968.
