When Spain entered Tenochtitlan in 1519, the days of the Aztecs were numbered. Spain captured the city (now the site of Mexico City itself) and, at its largest, the Spanish empire eventually came to include the land extending from California to Panama, and from the Caribbean to the Philippines. But as Spain weakened in the beginning of the 19th century, the desire for independence on the part of its colonists was heating up. Throughout the 19th and till the mid-20th centuries, dictators vied with reformers, puppets, or heroes for power. A colorful collection of politicians and statesmen have held power in Mexico and while the country has made huge strides economically and politically in the last half-century, it remains a country beset with problems including corruption, a damaged environment, an intermittent brain drain, and occasional guerilla activity on behalf of the Indian populations.

Wise Fool History In 1998, Amy Christian and Alessandra Ogren, two artists from Wise Fool Puppet Intervention, a giant puppet and street theatre company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and joined forces with Robbie Ann Pino and Jaime Smith to create Wise Fool New Mexico. In this way, Wise Fool New Mexico was born already possessing a rich and storied history spanning 11 years of community and political arts activism. Wise Fool Puppet Intervention began with the creation and appearance of four giant puppets at a Hiroshima Day Action at Livermore Weapons Laboratory in August of 1989. At the time, street theatre and giant puppetry were a relatively unheard of and innovative form of protest which caught the attention of media and fellow activist alike. Wise Fool grew quickly in popularity and participation. We were called on often by a wide range of activist and community groups to bring our highly visible images to their events, drawing media attention to the vital issues being addressed. All this excitement drove the principle artists to form a company to further bridge the worlds of art and activism, teaching activists to use art in protest, making a place for social issues and folk arts in the "Art World" and continuing the dialogue between art and lives of ordinary people.

History of Los Cabos Cabo San Lucas History Hernan Cortes sat in his headquarters on the Isthmus of Tecuantepec scheming about what he might conquer next. Bingo! A shipwreck survivor reported an island ten sailing days north that was populated by Amazons and was rich in gold and pearls. That sounded to Hernan like the fabled island of California ruled by the Amazonian Queen, Califia. He fairly drooled at the thought. "Andale, hombres", he told his ship builder, "get on with it". In 1535, with three galleons and a compliment of over 600 men and women, Hernan sailed into a tranquil bay which he promptly named Santa Cruz. It didn't take him long to figure out that there weren't no gold and there weren't no Amazons, neither. He packed up and sailed south for the last time. But there were pearls in the waters around Santa Cruz. Sebastian Vizcaino set up a pearl fishing colony there in 1596 knowing full well that he was certain to become a wealthy man. He found a few pearls, but not enough to support his expedititon; he also found a whole bunch of unsociable Indians. The only thing Sebastian got out of his misguided tour was an excellent chart of the Mar de Cortes. The only thing California got out of Sebastian's misguided greed was a new name for the pearl-less bay: La Paz. During that period, Spanish merchant marine interests had established a trade route from Luzon in the Philippines to Acapulco in the south of New Spain. They were transporting ton upon ton of oriental silk and spices; along with Mexican gold and silver with which to buy the treasures. The Spanish monarch loved the silk and spices; English pirates became inpassioned over the silver and gold.

Brief history of Campeche, Mexico. Travel Information for the Yucatan Peninsula Mexico CAMPECHE HISTORY Campeche is located on the southeast part of the Mexican Republic. It is bounded on the north and northeast by Yucatan, on the east by Quintana Roo and Belize, on the south by Guatemala, on the southwest by Tabasco. On the west and northwest side is the Gulf of Mexico. Campeche has an area of 56,114 sq. km. (21,665 sq. mi.) including 288 islands and has two kinds of climate: the humid warm and the sub-humid warm. The sub-humid warm climate has periods of rain in the summer and beginning of fall. The dry season is characterized by the convergence of warm winds from the east and the southwest. The humid warm climate is prevalent in the southwest part of the state. The City of Campeche, which is also a port in the Gulf of Mexico, is the capital of the state. It is located 196 km southeast of Merida by the federal highway 180, and 471 km northeast of Villahermosa by the federal highways 186, 261 and 180. The village of Can-Pech was believed to have been founded around the third century A.D. . On October 4, 1540, the Spanish founded the village of San Francisco de Campeche., under the leadership of Francisco de Montejo "El Mozo". During the 16 - 18 centuries, San Francisco de Campeche was converted and became a popular port of commercial trade on the Peninsula of Yucatan.
