I am especially keen on using morphological and molecular phylogenetic patterns to test evolutionary hypotheses concerning life-history and reproductive/developmental character evolution as well as biogeography. Through my Ph.D. study, I conducted a number of evolutionary studies of the cosmopolitan freshwater fingernail clams (Family Sphaeriidae) which exhibit various peculiar biological features, including hermaphroditism, self-fertilization, ovoviviparity and pronounced polyploidy. Chromosomes of various North American taxa were cytogenetically investigated and evolutionary hypotheses concerning the origins of sphaeriid genome duplication were tested by phylogenetic analyses of single-copy nuclear gene (PGD) allele sequences. Phylogenetic relationships among North American sphaeriid genera were tested using morphological characters. Finally, the current sphaeriid taxonomy was revised based on separate as well as combined phylogenetic analyses of three different gene sequence data, mitochondrial COI and 16S, and nuclear ITS1. Barnes , Stephen H. Spurr Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Barnes visited Japan from July 16 - Aug 7, 1997 as a Visiting Research Fellow (short-term) under the sponsorship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
