he more you know about the special education law, the better. As a student at Virginia Tech, I learned about the law from Dr. Phil Jones. Dr. Jones was president of CEC in 1975, the year landmark special education legislation (P.L. 94-142) was passed. He had an instrumental role in the passage of 94-142. He explained the how's and the whys of special education law like no one else could. I'll never forget reading his book and figuring out through the notations and quotes that he was the one who spoke at the signing ceremony and shook President Ford's hand. I was so awed that being in his presence left me pretty tounge tied for about 6 weeks. During my time at Virginia Tech, I felt honored to be his student. Dr. Jones passed away in 1994 but left a legacy through his work and his students. If you are a person who benefits somehow from special education law, thank Phil Jones. IDEA 97 gives us the definitions of disabilities, LEA and SEA obligations and more. When faced with a problem, review these informative pages before you take action. Statement on Sexual Assault

Information and Programs on Sexual Assault
    Introduction

Federal law requires institutions of higher education to develop and distribute a statement describing the institution’s programs that are aimed at the prevention of sexual offenses and the procedures for a victim to follow once a sexual offense has occurred. Through programs to prevent sexual assault( ) and to support victims of sexual assault, Michigan State University strives to create an environment free of sexual assault, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual victimization.
    Educational Opportunities
Michigan State University provides a variety of preventive/educational activities to promote awareness of rape, acquaintance rape and other sex offenses, including: professional and peer presentations in living units, classes, co-curricular groups, orientation sessions and community sessions; written and video resources; and self-defense classes. These programs are developed and delivered by many University departments and student organizations. For example, workshops on self-defense and sexual assault awareness are offered throughout the year by the Sexual Assault Crisis and Safety Education Program (located in the Counseling Center), 207 Student Services, 355-8270; the Women’s Resource Center, 353-1635; and the Self-Defense for Women Program at IM-Sports West, 355-5250. A one-credit course in women’s self-defense (PES 106L) is also offered regularly. These preventive/educational activities are coordinated through the Sexual Assault Crisis and Safety Education Program.

While this cap on the number of charter schools in Illinois is fairly restrictive for such a large state, it is not unusual. Many states limit the number of charter schools initially. A local school board must approve the charter school, although the board's decision can be appealed to the state board. The state does not provide funding for start-up costs. However, the Illinois State Board of Education received a federal grant of $788,000 per year (for potentially three years) to stimulate and support the establishment of charter schools.

How Financial Need is Determined and Aid Awarded

How Need-Based Aid Eligibility is Determined Financial aid programs were created with the idea that the primary responsibility for paying college costs rests with the student and his or her family. Need-based financial aid is available to families who demonstrate a need for additional resources to help pay college costs. The formula used to determine whether you are eligible for need-based aid is: Cost of Attendance Expected Family Contributio n Scholarships/Other Resources
(Michigan Education Trust, veteran's benefits, etc.)
Need for Aid Cost of Attendance re presents a reasonable estimate of the cost of attending the University for a full academic year (two semesters Fall and Winter terms ), including estimated amounts for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, plus a modest allowance for personal/miscellaneous expenses.
