Cindy Sabo, BSN, Registered Nurse Education: Cindy started her education at Michigan State University but later transferred to Grand Valley State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cindy has a special interest in alternative medical therapies and has also pursued studies in herbal medications. Cindy is able to lend helpful advice in this area. Experience: Cindy's spent much of her nursing career working in the Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic of Kent County Health Department. This has given her a special understanding of the risks of STDs. She has also worked as a staff nurse at Spectrum Hospital. Abstract The Multicultural Literacy Program (MLP), a three year project funded by FIRST (Fund for the Improvement and Reform of Schools and Teachers) of the U. S. Department of Education, was designed to address the needs of the changing racial and cultural demographics of school districts. The program used a wholistic approach to reading/writing instruction, integrating multicultural literature into the existing reading program to increase reading achievement and engagement. Site-based staff development and parent involvement were important elements of the program. The results of a two year study in two districts, one culturally diverse and the other predominately Anglo, showed that attitudes toward reading, writing, and other cultures were significantly more positive for students using the Multicultural Literature Program than the basal program. In addition, students in the culturally diverse district improved their reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and total reading performance significantly more than comparison students using the basal reading program.

Michigan Works! Agency Michigan Works! Team
The Barry/Branch/Calhoun Workforce Development Team was established at the CISD in July of 1995 for the purpose of administering workforce development programs in Barry, Branch and Calhoun counties. Funding sources include the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Work First and Welfare-to-Work (both welfare reform initiatives), and Employment Service programs; with these funds flowing to the local area from the Michigan Dept. of Career Development. A thirty-five person Workforce Development Board is responsible for program development, policy guidance and oversight of the Workforce Development programs. The Board is comprised primarily of private sector business owners, with the chair and vice-chair elected from the private sector representatives. Other representatives include education, rehabilitation, education, organized labor, economic development, public assistance and community based organizations. An "Education Advisory Group (EAG)" committee was established to provide guidance to the Workforce Development Board in the development of Career Preparation plans and other educational programs. The Workforce Development budget for the current year will total over six million dollars, enabling the board to provide education and training opportunities to approximately 550 individuals, public employment services to over 15,000 and to provide job club/job search to approximately 4,000 public assistance recipients. All of the workforce development programs are operated under sub-contracts with agencies outside of CISD. The Michigan Works! Team is strictly administrative in function.
