Quick profile: I am a geographer specializing in Geographic Information Systems and the legal environment of GIS, land ownership, and natural resource applications. My current research includes a study of land ownership parcelization (parcel subdivision) and forest cover change in a forested region in Northern Lower Michigan (NLM). Research Summary: Crawford, Grand Traverse, and Kalkaska Counites are three rural counties located within NLM that have exhibited rapid population growth trends over the last thirty years. Many local authorities have cited residential, seasonal home, and tourism-based platting and development as drivers of landscape fragmentation and forest degeneration. However, according to the latest USFS forest inventory, the three counties have exhibited significant trends of forest regeneration and growth over the same time period. My research looks into the counter intuitive nature of the observed trends and tries to determine the actual relationships between land ownership parcelization and forest cover change within these areas.

The Mackinal Bridge, one of the world's longest suspension bridges joins the two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula is shaped like a giant mitten. Its mitten-shape was carved out 2,500 years ago by glaciers. As the glaciers melted, the water filled the holes forming the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater lakes in the world. The glaciers also created thousands of smaller lakes, including Houghton, Saint Clair, and Gogebic. Much of the Lower Peninsula is fairly level, but some parts are rolling and hilly. Parts of the North-central Lower Peninsula rise 1,200 to 1,400 feet above sea level. Many high bluffs and sand dunes border Lake Michigan. The state's lowest point, 572 feet above the sea level is along the shore of Lake Erie. The southern half of the Lower Peninsula is the only part of the state has good farmland and the longest growing season in the state. Grand River, in the Lower Peninsula, is the longest river in the state. The Upper Peninsula, also called the Northern Peninsula, is the mountainous area of Michigan. The highest point in the entire state of Michigan is Mount Curwood, 604 meters (1,980 ft.) in the Huron Mountains followed by the Porcupine Mountains, 597 meters (1,958 ft.), both located in the western half of the Upper Peninsula. Bauer , Associate Professor, proudly announced in his professional practice course the birth of his first granddaughter. After an appropriate interval, the class proceeded to a designated establishment for the celebration of that special event. His work continues at Binder Park Zoo for the summer youth construction program. Each year since 1984 between two and five LA students supervise up to 50 local high school students in construction of up to $300,000 worth of improvements. As a result of a successful $12.5 million fund raising effort, the youth construction program will extend to the year 2002. Rauhe Dr. Joanne M. Westphal , Associate Professor, has completed work on the medical degree and is now officially a doctor2. She reports that NIH is very progressive in the areas of alternative and rehabilitation medicine so concepts like "wellness gardens" are well received by many researchers and physicians at the Institutes. She hopes to establish a collaborative research agenda with the National Institute on aging for the purpose of studying design efficacy for adult day care, Alzheimers, and special population facilities. Dr. Westphal was awarded a Merit Award in Planning and Landscape Analysis from the Michigan Chapter of ASLA this spring for work on the Old Mission Peninsula. She will be on sabbatical next year.
