Orchard Lake Schools Orchard Lake Schools Orchard Lake Schools Historic District comprises eleven buildings constructed between 1858 and 1924. The oldest, a massive Romanesque Revival house resembling a Norman Castle, was built in 1858 by one-time Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joseph Tarr Copeland. In 1877 Copeland sold the property to Joseph Summer Rodgers, who established the Michigan Military Academy on the site. Six of nine structures built in a quadrangle reflect the Romanesque Revival style. In 1909 the school once considered "the leading military institution in the country, outside of West Point." closed. The site was sold to Saint Cyril and Methodius Seminary, the nation's first Polish seminary. Father Joseph Dabrowski founded the seminary in 1885 in Detroit. The present complex, evolved from the seminary, includes Saint Mary's Preparatory School and Saint Mary's College. Joseph Tarr Copeland Maine native Joseph Tarr Copeland (1813 - 1893) graduated from Harvard College and studied law before coming to Michigan during the 1840s. In 1851 he was elected circuit court judge serving concurrently on the Michigan Supreme Court. Upon his retirement in 1858, he built this house. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the First Michigan Calvary. Within a year he rose to brigadier general. Copeland retired to his home in 1865. The first school house was constructed of logs in the southwest part of the township. There were 5 pupils in attendance and the school was taught by Olive Poole, who received a salary of $1.25 per week. In July, 1854 District #5 in the village was organized and school was conducted in the home of Harvey Tomblin. Andoinette Stoughten was the teacher for District #5. Two years later, in 1857, the first school house in the village was erected by William Shepard on the lot where the old Catholic Church now stands.

There was no "school" as it was understood by nineteenth century Europeans. Rather, children were allowed to roam freely throughout the community stopping and asking questions when and where they pleased. Children would work companionably alongside their parents or other adults, helping in small ways and gaining confidence and ability in various skills. Children often engaged in what the Dakota referred to as "small play," impersonating adults and mimicking their activities, conversations, and manners. Grandparents played a very important role in the education of children. Grandmothers, for example, bore responsibility for making girls "well behaved women." A grandmother would take it upon herself to tutor her granddaughter in the subtleties of daily life, such as how to move, how to interact with elders, where to sit at ceremonial occasions. In the evening it was common to send a daughter to her grandmother bearing a gift of food or tobacco. The gift was an invitation to the grandmother to instruct the child in the tribe's traditions that would help the girl understand both her place in the tribe and her people's place in the world.

Burroughs, the creator of the Tarzan character through numerous novels which were later translated to the movie and television screens, would scribble the phrase in a journal he kept during his five years as a cadet and teacher at the Michigan Military Academy. "Them Was the Days!" is also the title Brian J. Bohnett used for his definitive study of the MMA, once dubbed "The West Point of the West," that was in operation from 1877 to about 1907, when it closed due to bankruptcy. Today, alumni and friends of the Orchard Lake Schools recognize the 120-acre lakeside property as the home for SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, St. Mary¹s College of Ave Maria University and St. Mary¹s Preparatory.
