A nationwide initiative to improve efforts to control pediatric asthma. This program provides support to community-based coalitions to develop, implement, and sustain comprehensive asthma management programs. Asthma Research Collaborative
A network of faculty and research staff working on asthma-related research and initiatives in the academic homes of public health, internal medicine, pediatrics, pharmacy, nursing, and pathology as well as with colleagues in the Michigan Department of Community Health and related organizations. Asthma research at the University of Michigan also includes the integration of social, behavioral, environmental, and clinical aspects of asthma and the evaluation of interventions in community and clinical settings. Center for Clinical Investigation in Therapeutics
The Biometrics and Outcomes Research Core of the Center for Clinical Investigation and Therapeutics provides expertise in biostatistics, data management, and outcomes research for single-center and multi-center clinical trials and multidisciplinary research. The core can collaborate in proposal development and provide a full-service data-coordinating center, including either centralized or web-based data entry. In association with the center, it can assist in project management and monitoring, clinical trial coordination, and training of clinical investigators. Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (MAC-EPID)
This multidisciplinary center combines population approaches with modern molecular genetic techniques to better understand the pathogenesis, transmission, and evolution of infectious agents that impact human health, and ultimately to translate this understanding to the prevention and treatment of the diseases these agents cause.

TO: Okemos Teachers
FROM: Elementary LMC Coordinators:
Sandy Voglesong-Fields and Lynne Griffin Welcome New Teachers ! Introduction : As elementary LMC coordinators and administrators of the Dynix Library System we have set aside one day a week for instruction in each of our buildings. The rest of the time is for the administrative duties required to keep our district’s libraries up and running smoothly. Sandy is responsible for Central, Hiawatha, and Wardcliff. Lynne is assigned to Bennett Woods, Cornell and Edgewood. We are looking forward to working with you this year! Instruction: The grade level goals and objectives of our library lessons are located on our library home page ( http://okemos.k12.mi.us ). We like to have one introduction lesson with first grade and kindergarten classes in the fall, and then we start our block of instruction with the fourth and fifth grade classes. Second and third grade instruction takes place in the winter and kindergarten and first grade resumes after spring break. Classroom teachers are asked to stay with the class and participate in the lessons since we are continually introducing new library software, Web sites, and materials in the LMC. This makes follow-up and reinforcement of the library skills possible. Interns are more than welcome to join the classroom teacher for these lessons.

The GVSU School of Education offers a variety of graduate programs in support of Educational Technology leading to a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) and/or a K-12 Library Science endorsement for school library media specialists. The program allows students to select from three options: (A) M.Ed. in Computer/Technology services; (B1) M.Ed. in Library/Media Services; (B2) K-12 Library/Media Endorsement. Teachers, Computer coordinators, and media center personnel can benefit from the program through these options. The content of the program includes the educational application of technology, including computers and the Internet, CD/ROM, and other related technologies. Courses concentrate on hardware and software, software evaluation, curricular integration, acquisition and use of instructional materials, managerial use of technology, and media center development and management. The K-12 library science endorsement for school library and media specialists is approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Options D and E require the successful completion of the Michigan Subject Area Test in Library Science (administered by the state) to receive state endorsement. The endorsement in library science is then added to the initial Michigan teacher certificate.

MS: "What do you need information on?" ES: "John Huang, the Democratic fund raiser." MS: "The computer magazine search might be faster." ES: "I want to use the Internet." MS: "How about one of the newspapers on the computers?" ES: "I need the Internet." MS: "Other resources are easier to use. Why is the Internet so important?" ES: "It's the best place to go for information. We have it at home and I use it all the time." MS: "OK, we'll start with a metasearch driver that searches in several different ways and we'll see if we can find some good information." This discussion is one of a number of recent conversations I have had with high school students who feel that the Internet is the best place to conduct information research. Many of our students actively use the Internet in their homes for communication, recreation, and research. They feel comfortable with the Internet and prefer to use it at school. It is their information tool of choice and growing in popularity. Every year since 1988 the Internet has doubled in size. In June of 1993, there were 130 World Wide Web sites. Of these, only 1.5% were .com (commercial) sites. In January of 1997, there were an estimated 650,000 web sites and 62.6% were commercial sites.
