AAMC Files Brief in Support of University of Michigan Admissions Policy
Press Release
Contact: Retha Sherrod

For Immediate Release
Washington, D.C., February 17, 2003 - The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), along with numerous healthcare-related organizations, will file a brief tomorrow in support of the University of Michigan in the Grutter v. Bollinger case, now before the Supreme Court of the United States. This case, one of two affirmative action cases being considered by the Court, challenges the University of Michigan's use of racial preferences in its law school's admissions policies. As representatives of the nation's 126 medical schools, the AAMC argues in the brief that the medical profession must be able to consider race and ethnicity in selecting students in order to graduate a capable, effective physician workforce prepared to meet the needs of a diverse society. Without race-conscious admissions policies, medical schools would be unable to increase the number of minority physicians necessary to serve America and its ever-growing minority population, expand areas of academic research, and raise the general cultural competence of all physicians. "A reasonable balance in the racial and ethnic composition of our nation's physician workforce is essential if we are to care for an increasingly diverse population. No alternative to affirmative action in medical school admissions exists for meeting that need," said AAMC President Jordan J. Cohen, M.D. "In ruling on the affirmative action cases now before it, the Supreme Court must provide a clear means for allowing the medical and health professions to fulfill their solemn societal obligation."

http://www.geocities.com/elethinker/winter2001/inclusive.htm
DEVELOPING A LEADERSHIP NETWORK FOR INCLUSIVE SCHOOLING IN MICHIGAN Michael Peterson March 2, 2001 For the last three years, university faculty associated with the Whole Schooling Consortium have been working in several schools around Michigan as researchers and critical friends for supporting positive change. Each of these schools has made a commitment to including children with disabilities in general education classes and moving away from segregation and exclusion. These schools are also, simultaneously, struggling to honor diversity, operate democratically, partner with parents and the community, and build a sense of care and community in the school. We’ve been learning a lot. Out of conversations, we have become aware of the interest and need for teachers and principals and parents to network with other schools to learn from one another. Several of these schools also want to provide leadership for inclusive teaching and schooling practices in the state. Two key principals: Jan Colliton from Hillside Elementary in Farmington and Barbara Mick from Ausable Primary in Grayling, collaborated with university faculty to plan a meeting held on February 28, 2001 where staff from 7 schools formed a “MICHIGAN LEADERSHIP NETWORK FOR INCLUSIVE SCHOOLING.” We thought this would be a good and valuable meeting. However, we weren’t prepared for the unleashing of energy, creativity and commitment and sharing of stories that made many of us cry. Some 40 people attended, representing 7 schools and 4 school districts. Dr. Michael Peterson, Co-Director of the Whole Schooling Consortium, began with an overview of the Five Principles of Whole Schooling emphasizing the practical ways these principles play out in schools. (See http://www.coe.wayne.edu/CommunityBuilding/WSC.html).

General Information Dates Friday , March 28, 2003 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2003 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Michigan Collegiate Job Fair is a state-wide job fair held in March and November each year. It is a cost-effective means both for companies who want to recruit qualified graduates for primarily degreed, entry-level positions, and for job seekers who want to broaden their job search and network with hiring employers. Throughout Michigan, no other job fair has attracted as many schools, graduates and companies at one time in one day as demonstrated in MCJF's history.
MCJF started in 1987 when Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University got together to develop the idea of a state-wide job fair. The first Michigan Collegiate Job Fair held March 25, 1988, was a tremendous success. Approximately 2,500 graduates and 300 employer representatives from 88 companies networked at Oakland Community College's Orchard Ridge Campus for positions in most majors and degrees. Since then, MCJF has expanded and continued to thrive - even in depressed economic times. For more information regarding the March 28, 2003 Michigan Collegiate Job Fair...
