  • Regulation of nitrogen fixation in Klebsiella pneumoniae
Under oxygen- and nitrogen-limiting growth conditions K. pneumoniae is able to reduce molecular nitrogen to ammonia. Synthesis of the key enzyme nitrogenase is regulated in response to molecular oxygen and combined nitrogen by the two regulatory proteins NifA and NifL. Our research is focused on the characterization of the oxygen and nitrogen signal transduction towards NifL and NifA by genetic, biochemical and molecular biological methods. Our current model of signal transduction is shown in Fig. 1

A note about your final grades
Your final grades were calculated and verified by me and the two laboratory instructors. In the unlikely event that you discover a mistake in the computation of your final grade, a grade change will be considered. It is futile to contact me for explanations of "curves" and for discussions of personal problems that may have affected your performance. In a class having more than 80 students, there are invariably a number of misfortunes, including students who are victims of accidents or who learn that they (or members of their family) have cancers, require major surgery, etc. In cases involving serious disruptions, a request of an "incomplete" along with proof of the cause of the disruption, well before the end of the quarter, is advisable. A grade is earned, not granted. It certifies a level of understanding of the subject matter. It bears little relationship to the performance of the other students, and it has no relationship whatsoever to a student's personal problems or to his/her future plans. Anything else would devalue the reputation of the University.

Don't Touch That Doorknob!
How Germs Can Zap You and How You Can Zap Back , Warner Books, Publisher, publication date, October 1, 2001 was written by me and Edited by Dinah Dunn of Byron Preiss Visual Publications, New York and Jackie Merri Meyer of Warner Books. Available on-line and at bookstores, the book provides information on microorganisms associated with foodborne illness, colds and flu, day care, hospitals, travel, pets, home, work and those that may be used as an agent for biological warfare. All of the "Feature Articles," and the articles in "What the Heck is...?" and in "General Interest" were written by me, and therefore, any mistakes are mine, alone. I have tried to be as accurate as possible within the limits of providing the information in a "reader-friendly" format. Therefore, please forgive any latitude I have taken with the pure science discussed. With these caveats in mind: in keeping with the spirit of the "Web" and Internet, and the fact that this institution has been established for, and is devoted to, learning, all of the articles on these Pages are for anyone's use, as long as the use is for non-profit only, and this statement accompanies any copies.

General Meeting
ASM's General Meeting is held annually in the late spring and brings together microbiologists from diverse environments. ASM members in 26 topical divisions work together to create a program that is informative and educational in the following broad categories: diagnostic microbiology and epidemiology; pathogenesis and host response mechanisms; general and applied microbiology (including environmental microbiology); and molecular microbiology, physiology, and virology. Workshops in a small-scale hands-on setting are offered immediately preceding the meeting for an additional fee. 2003: May 18-May 22, Washington, DC

Bruce Paster of The Forsyth Institute has analysed the genes of bacteria recovered from the mouths of people with bad breath and revealed that halistosis may be caused by some novel bacterial species replacing the normal bacterial flora of the tongue. This opens up the possibility of using pro-biotics as a cure. Read the New Scientist article or the research abstract see below )for containing too much sugar and not enough fruit.

If you think that you have been so successful,
because you contributed a lot to the company, institution or society, or because you are smart, creative, innovative, etc. Probably you are Wrong The truth is : some one at the upper ladder loves you. It becomes a reality only because of her/his kindness. Similarly, you will enter into heaven, not only because of your good deeds, but because Allah loves you. That's humbleness Humble, is a character of Wisdom. The Value of LIFE

    General Information
    Location
The Department of Microbiology at Monash University is housed in two sections.
    Clayton Campus
The larger section is in a building completed in 1980 on the main campus at Clayton, and teaches Medical students (MB BS, BMedSc),  Science students (BSc) and Biomedical Science students (BBiomed Sci). It has an active and vigorous postgraduate program (MSc, PhD), with a current enrolment of approximately 40 postgraduate students. This section is located at building 53, Clayton Campus, Monash University.
    Monash Medical School, Alfred Hospital
The smaller section, which is involved in teaching Medical students as well as postgraduate students is housed in the Medical School at the Alfred Hospital, a major teaching hospital located near the centre of Melbourne, about 20 kilometres from the main campus. This section of the Microbiology Department is located on the 2nd floor of the Monash Medical School adjacent to the Alfred Hospital in Commercial Road, Prahran.
    Facilities
The larger section of the Department is housed in a modern well equipped building at Clayton, completed in 1980. The department is well equipped for research (especially in all molecular aspects of microbiology) and has in-house facilities for DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide synthesis, microarray reading, tissue culture, gas chromatography, HPLC, small-scale fermentation, protein purification, liquid scintillation counting, spectrophotometry, ultracentrifugation, and animal experimentation. Modern, faculty-based facilities are available for electron and confocal microscopy. The building also houses two undergraduate teaching laboratories and a class preparation area.
