All the Virology on the WWW
seeks to be the best single site for Virology information on the Internet. We have collected all the virology related Web sites that might be of interest to our fellow virologists, and others interested in learning more about viruses. Additionally, we have created an index to virus pictures on the web, The Big Picture Book of Viruses , which also functions as a resource for viral taxonomy. A collection of some of the best Online Virology and Microbiology Course Notes available can also be found here. If you're interested in even more information, we have The Virology Bookshop , an on-line microbiology and virology bookstore with a significant discount for our users. It is our hope that this site will provide both the professional virologist and the general public with access to information about viruses. Over the past several years, these pages have grown to encompass something of interest for everyone. The lists of virology related sites are divided into multiple pages, all of which are accessible from this page and from the more descriptive Complete Table of Contents . We even provide links to Virology Dictionaries if you're confused by some of this site's more technical content. These sites are listed without bias and with as much organization as we can muster.

. . . the study of very small living things, such as bacteria.
(Cambridge International Dictionary of English) Bacteria are one of the oldest of all life-forms. And after two billion years on earth, these bugs are getting famous. Bad Bugs
Instances of food poisoning are daily news, with some pathogens – that's the tiny percentage of bacteria that are dangerous – including Escherichia coli and Salmonella now household names. Other potentially deadly microbes such as those responsible for Legionnaire's disease and meningitis also continue to do good business. However, bacteria are not all bad news. Good Bugs
There are a number of good bugs about, who are really winning friends and influencing people. With a helping hand from microbiologists, the career opportunities for these single-cell wonders have truly taken off. Traditionally restricted to the role of fermenters in food production, bacteria are now being put to work centre stage in a host of other industries. They are being used to manufacture chemicals. They are helping to clean up environmental pollution. They are even being employed to improve production from oil reservoirs. Commercial Microbiology Inc. http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/GenWeb/Microbiology/General/general.htm
Current Level Previous Level What is microbiology? Microbiology is the study of living organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye - a diverse group of microscopic organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to protozoa and fungi. Microbes can be useful, such as those that decompose dead plant and animal matter or those that can be harnessed to produce antibiotics or foods like cheese, bread and yogurt. Microbes can also be harmful, such as those that cause disease, spoilage, or contaminate water supplies. Microbes can live in almost any environment, from Antarctica to the very hot, very acidic springs of Yellowstone. Some microbes are key to the cycling of crucial nutrients like carbon and nitrogen in their environment. The study of microbiology is important to a number of fields including medicine, food science, agriculture and biotechnology. General microbiology is a broad field which looks at the basics of microbial structure, physiology, growth and diversity. Microbes come in a range of shapes and sizes as can seen by checking out some of the image links below. Links to some
