Under Prof. Meinhard Moser, the initial focus areas of the institute were mycology and soil microbiology.Following the personnel extension and the move to a new building complex in the western part of Innsbruck in 1986, the three working groups "Applied Microbiology", "Ecology and Physiology of Microorganisms" and "Systematics, Taxonomy and Evolutionary Biology" were established. After the retirement of Prof. Moser, the Institute was successfully led into a new age by Prof. Reinhold Pöder, who was succeeded by Prof. Franz Schinner and Prof. Kurt Haselwandter. At present, the institute includes 13 posts (2 full professors, 5 associate professors, 2 academic posts, 4 technical posts) distributed among 17 people, as well as 15 staff members financed by third parties. **This site will be best viewed with Internet Explorer.** MMI HISTORY The University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine , organized as a two-year school in 1872, was the first publicly supported medical school west of the Mississippi River. The school survived the scathing “1910 Flexner Report on Medical Education in the United States and Canada” which led to the closure of the vast majority of the proprietary “medical school enterprises” of the time. Although the School of Medicine had, at times, experimented with a four-year curriculum, the current four-year program was not permanently established until 1955 when Frank B. Engley, Jr. (Ph.D., U. Penn., 1949) became the first formal Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology . Dr. Engley’s scholarly interests included antisepsis and disinfection, subjects for which he is internationally known. His term as Chair ended in January 1976 with the appointment of David J. Hentges

Themes Science Life Sciences General Biology ... Microbiology

Development of microscopy:
  • Aristotle (384-322) and others believed that living organisms could develop from non-living materials.
  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen (Dutch lens grinders) mounted two lenses in a tube to produce the first compound microscope.
  • Robert Hooke (1635-1703) published "Micrographia", containing drawings and detailed observations of biological materials made with the best compound microscope and illumination system of the time.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was the first person to observe microorganisms.
  • Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe pioneered developments in microscopy (such as immersion lenses and apochromatic lenses which reduce chromatic aberration) which perist until the present day.
  • Ernst Ruska constructed the first electron microscope.
For a detailed description of the history of light microscopy, click here. Spontaneous generation controversy:
  • Francesco Redi (1626-1678) was an Italian physician who refuted the idea of spontaneous generation by showing that rotting meat carefully kept from flies will not spontaneously produce maggots.

The content that was on BIOLOGY4KIDS has been moved to the new subscription based KAPILI.COM. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We believe that directing our efforts into one large science site will create a more successful learning experience. We hope you visit the new site. Learn a little about the new site below...
BIOLOGY TUTORIALS (Over 75):
The Kapili tutorials break down key ideas of science, math, and technology. Our tutorials are designed to break down a single topic into four parts. Each part will have a short paragraph and graphic used to illustrate an idea. We are using this style to help you learn complex ideas in bite-sized pieces.
You might be asking, "But what about a big topic like cells?" Using cells as an example you will find one page that talks about the general idea of what a cell is. Linked to that page and our main biology tutorial list you will find dozens of other pages. If you are new to cells you can start there and then move to a tutorial on the cell membrane, mitochondria, and even peroxisomes. Each of the detailed tutorials will also have the same layout with four paragraphs and four graphics.
Current biology tutorials include information on: Cells, Biosphere, Biochemistry, Ecology, Scientific Studies, Microbiology, Invertebrates, Vertebrates, Taxonomy, and Human Physiology.

Welcome
Microbiology has assumed prominence in our lives. Topical reference to it is widespread, whether in life sciences, biotechnology, food production and safety, environmental or health issues amongst many others. Much of the progress has accelerated remarkably with the availability of powerful techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics and biocomputing. Seminars

Bruce Paster of The Forsyth Institute has analysed the genes of bacteria recovered from the mouths of people with bad breath and revealed that halistosis may be caused by some novel bacterial species replacing the normal bacterial flora of the tongue. Molecular Microbiology
University of Groningen The objective of the research in our group is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of bacterial protein export and solute transport. The solute transport systems are studied in bacteria, archaea and lower eukaryotes. The emphasis of the work is on the energetics and kinetics of the translocation processes, and the structure analysis of the proteins; the role of transport processes in the physiology of the micro-organisms is also studied.
