Over the course of time, many great leaders such as Solomon, Alexander the Great, Pompey, Constantine, and Timurlane, vied for control of this region. In Damascus, glorious capital of the Omeyades, at one time the center of the extensive and powerful Arab empire, traces of civilizations dating back thousands of years have been discovered. The Saint Paul Gate, one of the oldest churches in Christendom; the Roman ramparts; the Byzantine chapels; the Great Mosque, where the tomb of St. John the Baptist is venerated; the bustling souqs and traditional shops ... all of these delight the eye and stimulate the imagination. Here, too, is Azem Palace, an exquisite jewel that has been lovingly maintained, and the impressive museum containing extensive riches dating from all eras.
Lebanon yields up an awe-inspiring wealth of historical wonders, including Baalbek, Sun City of the ancient world, its three monumental temples making it one of the most important Roman sites in the entire Middle East; the picturesque ruins of Anjar, unique testimony to eighth century Omeyad city-planning, its gigantic stones predating even those of Baalbek; Beirut, renowned center of law and learning, the astounding formations of its cavernous Jaitta Grotto glowing in an incredible range of pastel colors; the historical districts of Byblos, providing their unique chronicles of the Lebanese past clear back to the Stone Age; and the massive crusader castles and cathedrals of Tripoli, telling their tragic tale of religious persecution.

Home Topics Page for archaeology, anthropology ancient civilizations Archaeology Links by Topic Why study archaeology? Archaeology is an efficient teaching tool because its multi-disciplinary approach enables focused efforts. It can teach thinking skills, problem solving, and it enhances cooperative learning. It is also an excellent way to promote cultural awareness, which leads to an understanding of multicultural societies. Studying the past allows one to study and project the consequences of human behavior and decision making. For the most part, archaeologists work in teams with other archaeologists or with archaeology students. Archaeologists may be employed by a university, museum, governments, or commercial operations. An archaeologist is much like a detective, in that they both investigate clues to look for answers. An archaeologist looks for clues to learn how past peoples lived, so that we can understand more about how present peoples live. The resources you find here cover everything from field work, to lab work, to getting artifacts ready for public presentation. Please Note: Asterisks denote subjects which are broken down into numerous sub-topics. Links marked with

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... Many Mysteries A Great Oral Tradition
The European colonial powers called Africa “the Dark Continent” when they began their explorations. They saw it as a vast and dangerous place filled with savage people, but Africa has been home to many advanced, exotic civilizations. Many have been buried beneath the sands of time, but we know of others, and archaeologists continue to uncover more clues about ancient African civilizations.
West Africa has a great oral tradition. A griot is a learned storyteller, entertainer, and historian. Often a griot will memorize the genealogy, or family history, of everyone in a village going back centuries. American writer Alex Haley met a griot in 1966 that had memorized the entire story of the village of Juffure to a date two centuries in the past when his ancestor was enslaved. “The old griot had talked for nearly two hours up to then . . . ‘the oldest of these fours sons, Kunta, went away from his village and he was never seen again’ . . . I sat as if I were carved of stone. My blood seemed to have congealed. This man whose lifetime had been in this back-country African village had no way in the world to know that he had just echoed what I had heard all though my boyhood years on my grandma’s front porch in Henning, Tennessee.”

From the Near East comes the Old Babylonian account of the life and death of GILGAMESH There was a real Gilgamesh, a king who ruled some 2700 years before Christ lived and the Romans consolidated their vast empire. The character and the exploits of this king were preserved in the form of stories that circulated for many years after the king's death. Some of these tales more than 600 years after Gilgamesh's rule were collected by a story teller and were put down in the form of an epic poem. This poem is what we know today as The Epic of Gilgamesh
Who knows how many versions The Epic of Gilgamesh went through before consolidation in its written form? Who knows how many translations the stories underwent before their reworking in the Babylonian language? Who knows how many parts of the story might have offended or misrepresented the eponymous king? Who knows how many story-tellers made more (or less) of Mashu, the mountainous gateway to the other world, as they kept their audiences spellbound with fantastical details of this greatest of human adventures the struggle to find (and retain) eternal life?
What is known is no less intriguing. How curious is the parallel between the story of Utnapishtim and the

All Things to All People? No. This site can not and does not index all resources relating to things ancient on the web. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. There is an astounding amount of information about some topics out there (not all of it accurate or useful), and next to nothing about others. Please bear that in mind as you use the sources you find on-line. Just because one person says something doesn't make it true (or accepted as true). The web - as wonderful as it is - is still no substitute for good, old fashioned research at your local library. Your librarians - typically underpaid, underappreciated, and undervalued - are trained to help you find the materials you need - and didn't know you needed. Use your libraries and thank your librarians.
