listen 4:15 P.M. EST THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. I'm deeply concerned about the tragic loss of life and escalating violence in the Middle East. This is a matter of great interest to the United States and all who want peace in the region and in the world. There is a road map to peace. The Tenet security work plan will bring parties together to reduce the violence, improve the security situation and return to the path of peace. The Tenet work plan is the first step towards implementing the Mitchell Committee report in full, and resuming a political process between the sides. I'm committed to working with our partners in the region and around the world in the pursuit of this goal. The United States has a vision of a Middle East in which all people Arabs and Israelis can live as neighbors, in full peace and security.

Transcript: Powell, UN Secretary General Discuss Afghanistan, Middle East
(Speak with reporters following meeting at State Department)
November 29, 2001 Secretary of State Colin Powell and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan told reporters November 28, following their meeting at the State Department in Washington, that they had discussed all aspects of the situation in Afghanistan military, political, and humanitarian as well as the situation in the Middle East. Annan, in his remarks to reporters, said that his message to Afghan leaders meeting in Bonn is that "they have a unique and historic responsibility to do something for their people who have suffered for far too long." Annan urged the meeting participants to "seize this moment" and form a broad-based transitional administration," so that the international community can put in to Afghanistan "the kinds of resources that will be required to develop the country." Powell was also asked about Iraq, and President Bush's executive order that would permit U.S. military tribunals to try suspected terrorists. Resolution on U.S. policy in the Middle East November 10, 2002 Adopted by the Common Global Ministries Board of Directors at its semi-annual meeting, in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 10, 2002. The Common Global Ministries Board is a common witness of the Division of Overseas Ministries, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Wider Church Ministries, a covenanted ministry of the United Church of Christ. Theological Rationale In these times of war and rumors of war, we are surrounded by voices that cry for revenge, voices that inspire hatred, and voices that demand control. Such voices are not unique to our times. They are present across the ages, just as war is recorded in the annals of history in all times and places. They are not the only voices that cry out, though! Paul’s letter to the Galatians shows us a clear alternative, an attitude not determined by our basest instincts but rather guided by a faithful discernment of the Spirit’s guidance in our own lives, and the life of our nations. We are thus called to be instruments of the Spirit’s reconciling fruits, especially of peace, patience, and self-control; and to make our voices heard among the clamor for war. Background The Middle East has been a constant focus of our nation’s attention in recent months and years. Serious efforts to attain comprehensive peace in the region go back decades. United States foreign policymakers and Congress have wrestled extensively with the unignorable tension in the region. At the core of this tension is the Arab-Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which manifests itself politically, socially, and economically, and has contributed to events and phenomena that have had significant implications worldwide, including the events of September 11, 2001. A just resolution of the Arab-Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one that recognizes the pain and suffering of all sides, would be a primary factor in making progress toward a lasting peace in the region. The US has a central role in resolving the conflict, for it is the only country that can exert sufficient positive influence over all the actors.

Centre of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (CMEIS)
The Centre of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (CMEIS) was founded in 1960 by Professor Arthur Arberry to foster an interest in the Middle East, particularly the modern Middle East, among Cambridge scholars, students and the general public, and to promote research. Since that time CMEIS had broadened its remit to include promoting Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies in general by organising lectures, conferences and other events and forming links with projects working on Middle Eastern and Islamic topics. CMEIS is not a teaching institution but it is closely connected to the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies teaching section in the Faculty of Oriental Studies. It has an office and reading room in the Faculty of Oriental Studies and a library collection housed in the Faculty Library.
The CMEIS Library
The Centre's library collection is distinguished by its emphasis on the history, politics and economics of the modern Middle East. The library also possesses a collection of journals, economic and political reports and newspapers received regularly from the Middle East. Some of these publications are held in the Faculty Library, others are available in the CMEIS reading room. The library also possesses a small closed archive containing documents and the photographic collection of Sir Bertram Thomas who travelled in the Arabian peninsula in the 1930s. The centre provides an annual series of lectures by visiting scholars and fellows from the UK and abroad, and members of the University working in related fields. These lectures are open to everyone and attract a diverse audience of students, academics and members of the general public. It also organises the annual Bennett Memorial lecture, endowed in memory of John Bennett, a Fellow of Magdalene College, who had a keen interest in the region.

Michael Knights examines the factors determining their actions in the current crisis. Kurdistan is the only part of Iraq to stay liberated since the Gulf War, and Kurdish opposition parties could play a pivotal political and military role in the country's future following a regime change. In the event of a war, the area allows for a second front of troops to draw reserves away from Baghdad and the south. In peace, it could either represent a role model for any recast democratic, multi-ethnic government, or a source of further instability. Kurdistan has much to lose from regime change - following a decade of rule by the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) it has enjoyed increasing stability, prosperity and de facto autonomy from Baghdad.

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies was founded in 1954 for the purpose of furthering the study of the Middle East at Harvard University. This mandate has included a primary emphasis on the centuries since the rise of Islam and a concern with the wider Islamic world as well. CMES serves Harvard as the coordinating body and the primary source of additional support for the various academic programs that cover the vast region from Morocco and North Africa to Turkey and Iran. Over 20 faculty members in academic departments at Harvard are involved with CMES projects and activities and teach courses which primarily focus on Middle Eastern Studies. Dozens more Harvard faculty teach and research in subjects related to the Middle East. CMES is also home to more than 100 graduate students in Middle East-related fields, and a regular contingent of visiting faculty and research scholars. Middle Eastern studies flourish here in large part because of the superb Middle Eastern and Islamic collections in the Harvard University Library and the University Art Museums . The Center itself offers a rich and varied annual program of lectures and seminars ; houses several research projects (notably Moroccan Studies and the Iranian Oral History Program ), and a small reference collection; hosts scholarly conferences; serves as a center for scholarly interchange in New England; supports and administers a monograph series; and helps to ensure coverage of important fields among the over 200 Middle Eastern and Islamic related courses regularly listed in the

Iraq: The important issue
Amid scenes of vandalism and looting, sporadic acts of jubilation are carefully filmed by the camera crews. The important issue, however, needs to be addressed

It is never difficult to find people who will rejoice when the rule of law breaks down: they can run riot and go unpunished. It would not be surprising to find substantial numbers of people in certain areas of Iraq who will take the opportunity to join the side of the victors.
