Somali Immigrants in Minnesota
Although they are among the most recent refugees to arrive in Minnesota, Somalis have already made a great and positive impact on our community. Leaving behind the chaos and bloodshed of their East African homeland, they are busy reassembling their lives in a new country. History
The most recent and chaotic chapter in Somali history began in the mid-1800s when Somalia was broken apart and governed by France, England and Italy. Playing on traditional clan rivalries, these European nations maintained control of Somalia until 1960. After a brief period of civilian government, the oppressive military dictatorship of Siad Barre took power in 1969. Allied with the Soviet Union, the new government began to oppress and terrorize opponents. After a futile and costly war with neighboring Ethiopia, Barre's government collapsed and he was exiled in 1991. As different factions grasped for power, the violence and hardship became unbearable. In 1992, the U.S. Army estimated that 25% of all Somali children under five had died of malnutrition. Many people fled to refugee camps in nearby African nations, and from there, to the U.S. and Europe.

MN Minnesota's name comes from the Dakota (Sioux) word for the Minnesota River's "sky-tinted waters." In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state. Minnesota is an important producer of agricultural and manufactured goods. The state's history is the story of the development of its natural resources. The fur-bearing animals of the forests first attracted fur traders. Next, the fertile soil brought farmers, who poured into the region from the Eastern States and from Europe. The thick forests of tall pines attracted lumberjacks from Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin. Minnesota's scenic beauty, sparkling lakes and deep pine woods make it a vacation wonderland. Campers, canoeists and hikers can explore its vast northern wilderness areas. He wears his Green Bay Packers jersey to school with obsessive regularity. Normally, this wouldn't be a big problem, but Rocky attends school in Minnesota, where students are expected to be good little Minnesota Vikings fans from as early as fourth grade. They even have a special curriculum for this purpose. It's called Gridiron Geography , and it's provided to schools in Minnesota courtesy of the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings, and local newspapers. Gridiron Geography isn't just for Minnesotans; it's available in any city or region that boasts an NFL team: Indianapolis, Kansas City, Oakland, etc. You'd know all the cities if you had worked through the G.G. curriculum, because that's its purpose, to teach kids the geography of NFL team cities. Rocky's teacher had obtained the G.G. curriculum and had made it a requirement for her fourth grade class. The example of G.G. that I was able to obtain

Shrinking towns too small to grow, too tough to die
By Sue Halena
Staff Writer
Old schoolyard swings are motionless and the plaintive cries of a mourning dove break the silence so typical of a summer morning in Spring Hill. The quiet streets confirm statistics from remote Census Bureau offices: This is a shrinking and aging town, one of dozens in Minnesota that could slip away if trends of the 1990s continue. Almost 18 percent of Central Minnesota’s 74 cities lost more than 10 percent of their population in the past decade, while the ratio was 13 percent statewide.
