The Parent's Right To Know Act was introduced and passed in the 2000 Minnesota Legislature and includes recommendations for the use of integrated pest management in schools (see Developing an IPM Policy Statement for Your School The Working Group decided that a survey of pest management practices in Minnesota public and private K-12 schools was a good starting place to help identify current pest management practices because there was limited data on pest management practices in Minnesota K-12 schools. The MDA, with support of the Working Group, sought and was awarded funding in 1999 for the survey from the U.S. EPA, Region 5, Chicago, Illinois. The MDA took the initiative pursuant to its statutory authority contained in Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 17.114, Subd. 4, which states: "The state shall promote and facilitate the use of integrated pest management through education, technical or financial assistance, information and research."

Twin Cities celebration of peace will be visited by schools from New Jersey, Nebraska Minneapolis - More than 1,000 students from over 30 Minnesota K-12 schools will participate in the fifth annual Peace Prize Festival on Sunday, Feb. 20 from 12:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Augsburg College's Si Melby Hall (715 23rd Avenue South). This family-oriented event-free and open to the public-is a celebration of peace that is expressed through music, dance and exhibits created by students. The Peace Prize Festival works to counteract the culture of violence by giving students an opportunity to learn about and celebrate individuals who have dedicated their lives to peace and justice. The Festival also seeks to develop a personal commitment to peace in the next generation of leaders and offers youth both language and tactics for resolving issues before they become conflicts. At the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year, student groups participating in the Festival "adopted" a Nobel laureate, either living or dead, to study. The groups then created presentations on their chosen laureate's work for the Peace Prize Festival.

SECURE COMPUTING DONATES $9 MILLION GRANT IN WEB FILTERING TOOLS, SERVICES TO MINNESOTA SCHOOLS Lt. Governor, educators highlight importance of local-level monitoring of Internet for K-12 children during press conference Contact:
    Patty Garrison

    patty_garrison@securecomputing.com
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Aug. 12, 1997 - "Secure Computing's goal is to harness the power of the Internet for businesses, parents and educators alike," said Jeff Waxman, chairman and CEO of Secure Computing. "SmartFilter gives educators the ability to create and implement a school or district-wide Internet usage policy that is easily enforceable yet very flexible. SmartFilter ensures the productive use of the Internet in the classroom and gives teachers and parents the peace of mind that is essential for a positive learning environment." Web filtering and monitoring has been a particularly relevant and timely issue for schools in Minnesota, where legislators recently passed a bill that encourages all state-funded schools to implement a Web-filtering system. The bill also requires all state-funded schools to implement an Internet policy within one year. Lt. Governor Benson, along with many Minnesota parents of school-aged children, support the bill. "Secure Computing's generous grant is a perfect example of how state and local governments can work with private industry to bring about positive change for our children," said Lt. Governor Benson. "It is my hope that parents and educators take an active role in assuring that the Internet is used as an exciting tool to inspire students to reach their full potential."

DoodleOpolis is an integrated, thematic curriculum for grades 5-8 developed by the Architecture in the Schools Committee of the American Institute of Architects Minnesota. The curriculum teaches basic themes of the built environment in relation to the natural environment incorporating activities which will take students out of the classroom and use resources specific to the Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area as examples and learning tools. Students of DoodleOpolis will have a better understanding of both the concepts taught in the curriculum and the built environment they see everyday. They will develop a sense of ownership for the built environment and an understanding of the impact it has on their own community. Students will feel empowered to affect the quality of their environment.
The example available here is an exercise on sequence. The entire DoodleOpolis curriculum can be rented for $10.00/month. Please contact SallyJane Mathias, mathias@aia-mn.org

University Announces K-12 Technology Partnership Grant
Using technology to improve K-12 education in Northwest Minnesota is the goal of a new University of Minnesota project, announced February 19, 1997, by President Nils Hasselmo during his visit to Crookston on Wednesday. The University’s College of Education and Human Development in Minneapolis and the Crookston campus will partner to design and deliver education programs for K-12 teachers. Emphasis will be on using computer technology and the internet to improve teaching and learning of core subjects including social studies, reading, and math. Six schools have agreed to serve as pilot sites for the project and other schools are welcome to join. Participating schools are Bagley, Crookston Public, Crookston Cathedral, Fertile-Beltrami, Fisher and Mahnomen. Representatives from the participating schools met with President Hasselmo at UMC on February 19, to discuss the project. They also discussed other partnership projects including UMC’s College in the High School program being conducted in twelve K-12 schools in the region. Fertile-Beltrami School Superintendent Kristin Anderson reported on progress for her school to become a lap-top high, and she emphasized the importance of teacher education. "We have depended on UMC to help us create a lap-top learning environment. What we need now is teacher education to help our faculty make the best possible use of the new technology. Who better can we do that than the University’s College of Education."
