Genealogy Resources Available at the University of Minnesota Libraries
While there is no collection or staff specifically dedicated to genealogy in the University Libraries, the approximately 5 million volumes, a nationally-acclaimed map library, several thousand newspapers, and well over a million government documents constitute a rich resource for genealogists. However, genealogists often come to Wilson Library with unrealistic expectations of what they will find and go away disappointed and frustrated. Much of your basic research should be completed before you come to the library. You will need to bring with you the correct spelling and spelling variations of individuals' names and place names (foreign characters, e.g

We follow each speaker with a question/answer period and lively discussion between the participants. We feel we are fostering intellectual curiosity and connections with the academy which we serve. The relations developed in our first "class" have resulted in co-authored papers, collaborative projects, and understanding of what various units in the Libraries do. Submitted by:

SDT: Budget, Mentoring, and Courses
In 2001 , the Libraries implemented a mentoring program through which each assistant librarian working toward continuous appointment and promotion is paired with a senior librarian, who has agreed to serve as his or her mentor. We provided all participants in this program with articles on mentoring and had an orientation session. We chose mentors outside the individual's team or unit and have checked back with the mentors at three-month intervals to ensure that contact is continuing to occur. Informal comments received so far indicate that the program is working well and providing the kind of support and counsel that we hoped. Our classes offered by SDT are organized into five categories: core classes, multimedia skills, office skills, personal/professional development, and supervisory skills. In 2001, we implemented mandatory training for Libraries employees. All employees are required to take:
  • New Employees Orientation Ergonomics Understanding and Implementing Libraries Policies.
