Approved by the: University Senate April 17, 1997 Accepted and Implemented by the: Administration June 16, 1997 Action by the: Board of Regents - no action required
POLICY ON TRANSFER OF CREDIT
Credit for course work taken at other institutions will be transferred subject to the following considerations:
  • the mission of the institution from which credits would be transferred,
  • the comparability of the course work with University of Minnesota course work, and
  • the appropriateness of the course work for meeting baccalaureate degree requirements at the University of Minnesota.
Regional accreditation shall usually serve as the primary criterion for determining the transferability of course work from another institution. Credits from Minnesota Technical Colleges may be considered for transfer when appropriate to a student's degree program. Credit is not normally transferred from specialized or proprietary institutions, military schools, or industry-based education programs. It shall be the responsibility of the Director of Admissions on each campus to identify those institutions from which credit can be transferred and to determine whether course work is college level. If questions arise with regard to transfer of specific courses, the Director of Admissions will confer with the appropriate college or departmental faculty. When transfer of credits from Minnesota Technical Colleges, from specialized or proprietary institutions, military schools, or industry-based education programs is sought, the request shall automatically be referred by the Director of Admissions to the appropriate college or departmental faculty.

Minnesota's contribution to the military buildup for a possible war with Iraq continues to grow, with almost 300 Marine reservists activated for duty. Officials announced Friday that 75 Marines in the Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division, will depart next week, eventually heading to Southwest Asia. About 200 members of the Marine Wing Support Squadron-471 Detachment also reported for active duty. Both units also served in Operation Desert Storm. Early this week, about 150 members of the Minnesota National Guard departed from Camp Ripley for duty in Southwest Asia. About 140 members of the Army Reserve's 704th Chemical Company, based in Arden Hills, have been activated. And earlier this week, about 150 members of the Minnesota National Guard departed for Southwest Asia. In all, nearly 95,000 guard and reserve members nationwide have been activated, about 5,000 more than were activated following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. About 250,000 reservists and guard members were activated for the Desert Storm.

It has renewed my sense of national pride and helped me to realize the sacrifice that so many Americans have made for the freedom that I so often take for granted. When I first joined, I did it mostly for selfish reasons, reasons such as physical fitness (I couldn't even do one push up or sit up!!) and finanical assistance for school. However, my motives have changed since being in the program. I am here to serve my country, lead soldiers and maintain the freedom we have because after all...freedom ain't free...

MINNESOTA EDUCATION: 8 new charter schools to open
From: St. Paul Pioneer Press, MN - 13 Dec 2002 BY JOHN WELSH
Pioneer Press The state has approved eight new charter high schools, including two scheduled to open next year in St. Paul. The slate of newly approved schools is the largest expansion of charter high schools in the 10 years since the first-in-the-nation charter school opened in St. Paul. They include a military school designed to keep young people away from gangs, a school for Hmong students and a performing arts school championed by St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly. Four of the high schools approved by the state education department plan to open next year in Minneapolis or St. Paul. In St. Paul, the schools are Minnesota North Star Academy, which will focus on deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and the General John Vessey Jr. Leadership Academy, which is billing itself as the state's only public military school. In Minneapolis, the schools scheduled to open next year are the Hmong Academy and the Minnesota Internship Center. Schools also have been approved in Grand Marais and Bemidji.

Pro-choice campaign finally kicks off
After a year of planning and fund-raising, the Minnesota Pro-Choice Education Coalition is ready to launch its public education campaign in the Twin Cities. By placing posters at bus shelters and selected indoor advertising facilities, organizers hope to raise awareness among young women ages 18 to 25 about threats to their reproductive rights [MWP Jan. 19-Feb. 20, 2000]. The campaign will kick off on Feb. 5, with 50 ads throughout the metro area. Indoor advertising will run for three months, while outdoor ads at bus shelters will run for one month. The coalition includes Pro-Choice Resources, Midwest Health Center for Women, the Minnesota NARAL Foundation and Planned Parenthood of Minnesota/South Dakota. For more information about the campaign or to offer support, call 1-888-546-7895 or log onto www.mnpcec.org
Abortion debate heats up
Just as President Bush turned up the anti-abortion heat last week when he restricted U.S. funding for international family planning organizations, Minnesota senators and representatives are re-entering the abortion fray with their own anti-choice legislation. It is this amendment that is perhaps most disconcerting, Stanley said. Sponsored by Sen. Don Samuelson, DFL-Brainerd, it would ask voters in the 2002 elections whether they want the Minnesota Constitution to conform to the U.S. constitution on the subject of abortion.
