Home For NU's New Media Center, the Keyword is Partnership T he Northwestern University New Media Center (NUNMC) is a collaborative effort between the Northwestern University Library and IT Academic Technologies. For nearly three years, the NUNMC has played an increasingly important role in cementing partnerships between the University Library and NU Information Technology. A key example is the TiLT (Technology in Learning and Teaching) program, an IT-Library partnership which has attracted participants from around the world to the Evanston campus. In 1996, Northwestern was named a member of New Media Centers, a nationwide consortium of academic and corporate members designed to study and promote the use of multimedia in higher education. While the New Media Center designation extends to the entire Evanston campus, its physical hub is the Multimedia Development Lab in the University Library's Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center. That's where you can usually find Claire Dougherty (IT Academic Technologies), recently named director of the NUNMC, who has directed the Multimedia Development Lab for several years. Arts High School Media Arts Program The Media Arts Program teaches students to use elements and tools of current and emerging technologies to create works which express feelings and ideas. Students are challenged to appreciate, analyze and create works through photography, cinema, sound, digital arts and interactive media. Students obtain four credits in four semesters of intensive sequential curriculum using the block system. The lens based curriculum covers key concepts such as sequencing, montage, sound and image relationships, and the elements of time and motion. Junior students are introduced to a variety of genres and approaches to subject matter, basic technology, and criticism in an historical and cultural context. Students develop critical and creative thinking skills by creating works that convey their own ideas. Senior students learn advanced skills and techniques, advanced history and theory, career planning and portfolio, and work on an independent senior project of their choice as they develop a personal vision. She came to the University of Minnesota in July 2000 after nine years at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida. At the Poynter Institute she led the programming efforts in the areas of news library management, computer-assisted research, and new media leadership. Prior to the Poynter Institute, Nora was the Editor, Information Services at the Miami Herald from 1979-1991 where she developed one of the early full-text electronic archives for news, brought in computer-assisted research, and created a fee-based news research service for the public.
