Introduction
From the tiny island of Crete throughout most of the known world ( via Alexander the Great ), the Greek standard of excellence spread. "All men by nature deserve to know" according to Aristotle and the Greek Scholars set out to learn about and put order to their universe. Their independent and individualistic character gave the world democracy. Scientists like Euclid, Pythagoras and Archimedes advanced the study of mathematics, while historians Herodotus and Thucydides brought accuracy, reason and even objectivity to the recording of events. The Greeks investigated the metaphysical as well as the physical worlds and in doing so broadened the base of human knowledge.
Greeks attained the same perfect harmony and proportion in their art that they believed existed in the natural world. Lifelike sculptures of ideal athletes, heroes and gods dominated the classical period while emotion took center stage during the Hellenistic era. The ruins of ancient temples give evidence of the proportion, balance and harmony of classical architecture. Drama was elevated to an art form. Greek art, architecture, drama, scientific achievements, philosophies and government have had a marked influenced on the modern world.

Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

The Odyssesy gives a list of people living on Crete; among that group he lists are the "Eteo-Cretans," who are probably the original Minoans. This group persists as an independent group until around 140 BC; their language, Eteo-Cretan, was probably a near relative of the language of the Minoans. The Greeks called non-Hellenic languages "barbaric," from the word "barbar," which means "speaking nonsense" ("bar bar bar bar"). They called people who spoke barbaric languages, "barbarians"; so the Greeks in many ways distinguished themselves from other people by the language they spoke. The Eteo-Cretans, then, originators of Greek civilization itself, had become the barbarians in the Greek world.
bureaucratic monarchies . While the government was dominated by priests and while the monarch seemed to have some religious functions, the principle role of the monarch seemed to be that of "chief entrepreneur," or better yet, CEO of the Cretan state. For the Cretans operated their state as a business, and entrepreneurship seemed to be the order of the day. While the bulk of the population enjoyed the wealth of international trading, the circumstances of that trade was tightly controlled from the palace. Beneath the king was a large administration of scribes and bureaucrats who carefully regulated production and distribution both within the state and without. This administration kept incredibly detailed records, which implies that they exercised a great deal of control over the economy.

Ancient Apocalypse: The Fall of the Minoan Civilisation By Jessica Cecil 1 of 4 Volcanic explosion Tsunami destruction Cycle of disaster Go further ... Printable version The market place of Knossos on Crete at the height of the Minoan Empire Volcanic explosion Three and a half thousand years ago, the tiny Aegean island of Thera was devastated by one of the worst natural disasters since the Ice Age - a huge volcanic eruption. This cataclysm happened 100km from the island of Crete, the home of the thriving Minoan civilisation. Fifty years after the eruption, that civilisation was in ruins. Did the volcano deliver a death blow to the Minoans? It's a whodunnit that has haunted historians and scientists for decades. The lost world of the Minoans has intrigued people for thousands of years. Their palace at Knossos was vast and elaborate, with Europe's first paved roads and running water. The ancient Greeks wove its magnificence into their myths; it was the home of King Minos and his man-eating bull, the Minotaur, which roamed the palace labyrinth. In the 1900s, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans excavated and restored the ruins at Knossos. Beautiful and delicate frescoes of bulls and dolphins revealed a highly artistic civilisation and a people who apparently lived in harmony with nature.

Article I INTRODUCTION
Ancient Greece , civilization that thrived around the Mediterranean Sea from the 3rd millennium to the 1st century BC The most famous period of ancient Greek civilization is called the Classical Age, which lasted from about 480 to 323 BC . During this period, ancient Greeks reached their highest prosperity and produced amazing cultural accomplishments. Unlike most other peoples of the time, Greeks of the Classical Age usually were not ruled by kings. Greek communities treasured the freedom to govern themselves, although they argued about the best way to do that and often warred against each other. What Greek communities shared were their traditions of language, religion, customs, and international festivals, such as the ancient Olympic Games. The city-states of ancient Greece fell to Roman conquerors in 146 BC . When Rome split in the 4th century AD

A Hellenistic Greece (323-31 BC BC ) founded a kingdom encompassing parts of Asia Minor, the Middle East, Macedonia, and Greece; Seleucus I (358?-281 BC ) established rule over Babylonia and over land as far east as India; and Ptolemy I (367?-283? Occupations
Archaeological evidence gives us information about the ordinary activities of Minoan people. The remains of their tools tell us about the sorts of work that people did. The occupants of the palace workrooms, for example, left behind a number of huge bronze saws, some stone hammers, different sorts of knives and stone axes. In the town of Gournia too, the excavator, Harriet Boyd, found a large collection of specialist tools, such as chisels, knives, awls, punches, nails, hammers, grinding querns, loom weights, and fish hooks. It is easy for you to work out the occupations from those. And we need only to look at the remains of buildings in Gournia and other places in Crete to realise that the masons, or workers who cut stone, must have been among the most essential Minoan tradesmen.
