WASHINGTON David Durant took what he probably thought would be a brief stroll on a crisp, clear day in October near Abbot Home, his senior citizens residence in Zanesville, Ohio.
He never made it back.
Police looked for Durant, 65, for days, peering into dank storm drains and searching local forests and rivers. But no trace was found of the quiet but friendly man.
"That one will follow me until I retire," Detective Tim Collins said of the case.
A missing child strikes an emotional chord with the public and often gets lots of media attention. The saga of Elizabeth Smart, 14, a pajama-clad Utah girl reportedly abducted at gunpoint in June from her bedroom, is an almost daily staple on television news.
But missing persons advocates, including John Walsh of Fox television's "America's Most Wanted" said police and media also should give more scrutiny to about 200,000 grown men and women who disappear each year.
Federal and state law and most local police department protocol call for immediate missing children investigations. But that is not the case with adults.

November 7, 2000 Editorial Missing adults aren’t forgotten SALISBURY POST When are missing children not missing children? When they’re 18 or older. Congress has taken a step toward bridging the gap between what agencies can do in the cases of missing children and what they can do concerning missing adults. Late last month, both the Senate and the House passed “Kristen’s Act,” making federal funds available for agencies that help find missing persons that are classified as at-risk or endangered by law enforcement, regardless of age. Many in this area are familiar with the plight of the Modafferi family in Charlotte. Their 18-year-old daughter Kristen, a design student at N.C. State, disappeared while working in San Francisco in the summer of 1997. She has not been seen again. What many people do not realize, however, is the way the search for Kristen may have been hampered by her age. According to Rep. Sue Myrick, when Kristen’s parents called the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children they were told, “Sorry, we can’t help you.” The federal funds allocated to the agency were specifically designated for use in finding children under the age of 18.

Tony Uricoli stands in his son's room in the family home in the Town of Poughkeepsie. His son, Tony, has been missing since January. Anthony ''Tony'' Urciuoli Jr. told his parents he was going out to play pool one night in January. They haven't seen him since. ''I'm in denial,'' said his father Anthony Urciuoli. ''The nights are rough. I would sooner not be born than to go through what I'm going through.'' The 31-year-old Town of Poughkeepsie resident is just one thousands of adults nationwide reported missing each year. While the number of missing children has declined about 4 percent since 1996, the number of missing adults increased 26 percent in the same time frame. The case of missing government intern Chandra Levy has brought national attention to missing adults and the difference between the way adult cases are handled when compared with children.

Dougla Gene Kirk http://go.to/DougKirk BY DALE ELLIS Staff Writer On Thursday, August 3, 1995, Douglas Eugene Kirk of McRae went to visit his grandmother. After he left her home, no one in his family ever saw him again. According to reports, he attended a concert in Little Rock the following day, then spent the night at a motel. He was supposed to meet his girlfriend the night of August 5 at a reservoir near McRae, but according to her statement to White County sheriff's investigators, he never showed up. His parents, Rip and Novela Kirk waited until they couldn't wait any longer, and on August 18, they filed a missing person report with the sheriff's office. Then, the family sat back and waited for the authorities to take care of everything. They have waited a long time. Doug Kirk has vanished, apparently into thin air, leaving behind a son, now 15, and a bewildered and grief-stricken family. Shawna Kirk was particularly close to her brother-in-law, having married his brother Rick, a truck driver.

Act 80 of 2001 3rd Annual Missing Adult Awareness Day August 5th, Missing Adult Awareness Day Recognizing the tremendous need of services for missing persons over the age of 18, several Arkansas citizens are banding together in a united effort to offer assistance. The concerned group of individuals joined forces to form a non-profit organization; the National Center for Endangered Missing Adults (NCEMA). The organization will be the first in the nation that exclusively represents missing adults and their families. The members of the organization worked closely together and were instrumental in developing Arkansas legislation governing missing adults. The decision was made prior to the 2001 legislative session to continue in their shared mission and to offer services for endangered and involuntary missing adults throughout the United States. The ultimate goal of the organization will be to provide the same quality of standards in assistance and resources for missing adults that is currently available for locating and recovering missing children. The majority of missing adult cases are unrecognized and unrepresented. The growing group of victims ranges in age from young adults to senior citizens, and reaches across all walks of life.

Kristen's Act is now Kristen's Law (Public Law #106- 468). This means that a national clearing house will be established for missing adults, and that for the next four years, $1 million annually will be allocated to be used to help search for missing adults, age 18 and over, who are classified by law enforcement as at-risk/endangered. Kristen's Law is a reality in large part because of the many petitions and letters of support that went to our Senators and Congressmen urging that the law be passed. Without your support, we would not have been able to lobby successfully in Washington, DC, and we thank you for taking a stand on behalf of Kristen and Kristen's Law. Ongoing support is still required! Ideally, we would like to see the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) respond to Kristen's Law by revising their charter to remove their "18 and under" age restrictions. NCMEC would then provide the same services and resources to search for at-risk missing adults that they currently provide for missing children. We ask that you write your Senators and Congressmen to voice your support of this important change to the Charter of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Read more about Kristen's Law at http://www.house.gov/myrick/kristen-text.htm

University student still missing two years later
Tom Rybarczyk
Metro editor Linda Katcher, mother of missing University student Ryan Katcher, said she feels she spent the last two years of her life "reinventing the wheel" while searching for her missing son. "I keep asking, 'why isn't there a better way?'" Linda said. Tuesday marks the two-year anniversary of Ryan's disappearance. For Katcher, "reinventing the wheel" is keeping in touch with the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department and trying to find any way to get the word out about looking for him. This included getting Danville, Ill.-based shipping firm McLane Midwest to paste 16-by-24 foot posters on their trucks. It also included having local trucking Teamsters Union bring 500 of the posters to their national convention in Las Vegas. "We thought about putting a billboard up, but we don't know where he is," Linda said. "It's kind of like a moving billboard." Searching for help The search for Ryan began on Nov. 5, 2000, when his truck disappeared from his home in Oakwood, Ill., and no one knew of his whereabouts. That day, Linda called the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department and reported Ryan missing. He became one of the 100,000 people who are missing on any given day, according to Kym Pasqualini, founder of the Nation's Missing Children Organization and Center for Missing Adults. Forty percent of those missing persons are adults. Linda and the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department began their search with a two-week foot search of the area. By the third day, private planes were flying overhead, scouring for any sign of Ryan or his missing truck, Linda said. By February, boats were sending sonar signals in area lakes, trying to find any sign of Ryan's truck.

Missing adults draw less scrutiny

When friends notified police last Sunday morning that Deanna Zuleger Scantlin was missing, officers responded almost immediately. "I was happy with the fact that they didn't have to wait for a certain number of hours to start their investigation ... and that they had a lot of people out there searching," said Kelly Koplitz, a friend of Zuleger Scantlin's family. Not all disappearances provoke such action. A missing child strikes an emotional chord with the public and often gets lots of media attention. But missing persons advocates, including John Walsh of Fox television's "America's Most Wanted," said police and media also should give more scrutiny to about 200,000 grown men and women who disappear each year. Federal and state law and most local police department protocol call for immediate missing children investigations. But that is not the case with adults. And most police departments, especially in rural areas, on average have just 10 officers, Walsh said. This often is not enough manpower to pursue missing adults for long periods, he said.
