Use your Browser's BACK Button to Return. More or Less Chronologically (then by State, City): Education: Flogging the SATs
"The annual SAT-bashing season is upon us once again, with familiar cries of "bias" and complaints about "the national mania for testing." Some critics demand that college admission tests be eliminated altogether and replaced by some other arrangement, perhaps a lottery, subjective judgments by school officials, or some sort of "representation"–a modified racial quota system designed to pass judicial review. The Department of Education weighed in with the threat of "disparate impact" litigation if schools rely heavily on tests and don't admit significant numbers of minority students. Some plans suggest tinkering with test results. "The Educational Testing Service, which runs the SATs, floated a trial balloon to grant an extra edge, like a golf handicap, to disadvantaged "strivers" who worked hard but scored low. The most publicized of the anti-SAT suggestions comes from journalist Nicholas Lemann, author of the impressive new history of the SATs, The Big Test.

    The Setting
    The University
An able faculty, drawn from the best institutions in all parts of the nation, strive earnestly to perfect their teaching skills, while producing in their specialized studies scholarly books, articles, and conference papers that gain respect for themselves, the University, and the state. They thus ensure for their students instruction that is in immediate touch with current knowledge and thought. A body of energetic researchers, both faculty and other, assisted by an effective research administration, places Mississippi State among the first one hundred universities in the nation in federal research support. The University's service agencies are similarly distinguished, earning the respect and support of their varied constituencies throughout the state, as well as in other states and in foreign countries.
    The History
By 1932, when the Legislature renamed the College as Mississippi State College, it consisted of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1887), the College of Engineering (1902), the College of Agriculture (1903), the School of Industrial Pedagogy (1909), the School of General Science (1911), the College of Business and Industry (1915), the Mississippi Agricultural Extension Service (1915), and the Division of Continuing Education, (1919). Further, in 1926 the College had received its first accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. By 1958, when the Legislature again renamed the College, as Mississippi State University, the Graduate School had been organized (1936), doctoral degree programs had begun (1951), the School of Forest Resources had been established (1954), and the College of Arts and Sciences had been created (1956).

Mississippi's commitment to education is historic, constantly upgrading the skills of teachers, familiarizing them with the latest national teaching techniques and trends, and maintaining competitive salary levels to keep some of the nation's finest educators in Mississippi.
The state set impressive national examples by introducing the first state-supported school for the handicapped, the first state college for women, the first coeducational college to grant degrees to women, and the oldest land-grant college for black Americans.
Responding in 1987 to a national concern about mathematics and science, the Mississippi Legislature established the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science . MSMS, the nation's fourth oldest school of its kind, is a residential high school for academically able students, and offers a college preparatory curriculum which emphasizes instruction in mathematics and science. In addition, courses in the humanities, computer technology, foreign languages, music, and art are offered to allow students to participate in a well rounded curriculum

    HISTORY
As one of the smaller dental schools in the United States, the excellence of the academic, research and service programs is recognized. Our graduates now comprise 40 percent of the active practicing dentists in the state. This correlates well with the fact that more than 70 percent of our graduates practice in Mississippi. Our two postdoctoral programs, a general practice residency with six residents and an advanced education in general dentistry with five residents, strongly support and enhance our missions. As the only dental school in Mississippi, the outstanding faculty and staff and our excellent student body are committed to serving the state and the dental profession. HISTORY The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. The Medical Center opened in 1955, but its beginnings date to 1903 when a two-year medical school was established on the parent campus in Oxford. In that era, certificate graduates went out of state to complete their doctor of medicine degrees. Finally, in 1950, the Mississippi Legislature by a one-vote margin enacted a law to create a four-year medical school. On July 1, 1955, the state's new University Medical Center, or UMC as it's commonly called, opened in Jackson, initially as a four-year medical school with medical and graduate students, interns and residents. As it had in Oxford, the School of Medicine offered both medical and graduate degree programs. The campus included a teaching hospital and a library. The Oxford campus' nursing department moved to the Medical Center in 1956 and it was granted school status in 1958. The School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) was added in 1971 and began offering baccalaureate curricula in 1973. The School of Dentistry was authorized in 1973, and its first students were admitted in 1975. The Medical Center functions as a separately funded, semi-autonomous unit responsible to the chancellor of the University of Mississippi and, through him, to the constitutional Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, which governs all eight state institutions of higher learning in Mississippi. The Medical Center's chief executive officer is the vice chancellor for health affairs.

After Mississippi educators banded together against a fourth consecutive school budget cut, a state legislative bill provides enough money to steady education funding. Both the Mississippi Senate and House of Representatives passed the proposal last week, marking the first time in state history that such a bill has been approved in the first 30 days of legislative meeting. It will grant Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning $70 million, more than the $52 million suggested by the Legislative Budget Committee or 62 percent of the state's general fund, for the 2004 fiscal year. Over the last four years, the budget dropped to 57 percent. "When three education entities join together, they're a pretty powerful force that can make things happen," Ole Miss Executive Assistant to the Chancellor Andy Mullins said.
