Message from the Dean School of Nursing Deans Office Directors History ... School Events The University of Mississippi School of Nursing is fully accredited by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN This is an exciting time for the nursing profession. As health care changes, the career opportunities for nurses are without parallel. To achieve your career objective, you must first obtain a superb education. At the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, you will find the excellent faculty, curriculum and training sites necessary to help you meet your goals. The School of Nursing was founded in 1948 as a department of nursing, offering the first baccalaureate program in the state. Since that time, its more than 2,000 graduates have cared for the people of Mississippi in hospitals, clinics, and at home. We also initiated the state's first masters program in nursing in 1970 and its first collaborative doctoral program in 1998. Today, we continue to create new and innovative ways to provide care to Mississippians. Our nurse-run primary care clinic is the first in the state. The clinic provides real-life learning experiences for all our students, as well as a site for faculty practice. The school also developed a primary care clinic in a local elementary school. In addition to teaching and faculty practice, faculty continue to research health care problems. As a marker of our success, faculty have been invited to present their findings at research conferences all over the world.

A wide variety of individually designed engineering curricula leading to the four-year Bachelor of Engineering degree are available for those students who wish to base their college work on a background of engineering, science, and mathematics courses. Students in Bachelor of Engineering programs, regardless of their individually planned curricula, will follow one of three paths of study.
    Pre-professional Path
This approach to the Bachelor of Engineering degree stresses science and technology and the foundation knowledge for a particular profession. Students earning this degree will be able to continue their education in professional programs such as engineering, the sciences, medicine, law, business, and dentistry on the basis of a technical as well as liberal education.
    Terminal Path
This approach to the Bachelor of Engineering degree is based on individually designed curricula that permit the student to obtain a strong background in science and technology while simultaneously giving the student a broad education outside these areas of study. This path offers an excellent education for students whose career interests lie in the military, in technical writing, and the operation of technically based businesses, such as technical sales.

      Natural Heritage Inventory: General Information
      An Inventory of Biological Diversity
The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program identifies the state's most significant natural areas through a comprehensive inventory of rare plant and animal species, exemplary natural communities, special geological features, and significant natural areas. From the inventory, the Natural Heritage Database compiles information on the distribution, biology, status, and preservation needs of these species and communities. Established in 1976, through a cooperative agreement between The Nature Conservancy, a private conservation organization, and the Mississippi Parks Commission (now part of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks), full administration of the program was assumed by the DWFP in 1978. The Mississippi Natural Heritage Program is part of an international network including State Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centers, all building on the same data collection methodology. The database is updated continuously and is used to set state, national and global priorities for the preservation of natural diversity.
      The Natural Heritage Database
      Information Available from the Database
      • Tracks the status of more than 600 species of plants and animals that are rare or imperiled at the state or global level.
