    This calendar is a work in progress, with events frequently changing. This winter and spring there are several broad themes to Sue's work:
    • Total Literacy is being implemented in Lawrence Township (K and discipline-based teachers this year) and Hartford, Connecticut (McDonough School pilot with struggling 2nd and 3rd grade readers), and in the Lighthouse after school program in Bridgeport. Bradley Elementary School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is moving toward arts-based curriculum as well. Sue is program chair and on the executive board of The Music and Arts Center for Humanity (MACH) and invites local arts educators and interested community members to support MACH and consider board membership. Other projects involve The Grammy Foundation Leonard Bernstein Center for Learning , and Macmillan/McGraw-Hill School Division . There are several conferences and colloquia during the year.

    Faculty Senate Home A Faculty Senate Perspective Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen: Let me use two quotations to capsulize what we feel and what we see at the beginning of this school year. The first one is one which takes me by surprise because it is one from which I have shied away for years. It is from Charles Dickens' A TALE OF TWO CITIES. "These are the best of times and the worst of times." The second is from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Holy Bible. "To every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven."
    It may seem strange to say that these are the best of times when we consider what is happening in terms of local and international violence and injustice. when we consider the exposure and the collapse of giant corporations. when we consider the budgetary condition of the state of Mississippi. and when we consider the particular problems facing Jackson State University. Yet there are some reasons to say that these are the best of times.
    These four committees set the framework for real protection for and involvement by the faculty in matters of fairness and due process. In order to maximize the opportunities, however, faculty must be willing to elect the ~t people for the committees. Faculty must be willing to utilize these avenues rather than simply submit to conditions and decisions that may be unfair.

    The Supreme Court rules on the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans., unanimously agreeing that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. The ruling paves the way for large-scale desegregation. It is a victory for NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall, who will later return to the Supreme Court as the nation's first black justice.
    Dec. 1
    (Montgomery, Ala.) NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat at the front of the bus to a white passenger, defying a southern custom of the time. In response to her arrest the Montgomery black community launches a bus boycott, which will last for more than a year, until the buses are desegregated Dec. 21, 1956. As newly elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA), Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., is instrumental in leading the boycott. Rev. King, Charles K. Steele, and Fred L. Shuttlesworth establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, of which King is made the first president. The SCLC becomes a major force in organizing the civil rights movement.

This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
