The Mississippi University for Women has a long-established reputation for producing excellent elementary and secondary teachers. Among Mississippi's state supported universities, MUW students have recorded the highest scores on the National Teacher's Exam for 12 of the past 15 years. Outstanding scores on the NTE is, of course, not the only measure of excellence in a teacher training program. Perhaps the best test of all is the performance of its graduates in the classroom. Traditionally, MUW graduates who have chosen teaching as a career have enjoyed remarkable success at every level from kindergarten through high school. Many of the most honored teachers in Mississippi through the years have been MUW graduates. One of the strengths of the secondary education programs at MUW, including Math and Science education, lies in the fact that the students major in academic areas. Others wonder, Does the United States really have a teacher shortage The summer of 1998 might be a sign of things to come for recruiters who are busy trying to fill teaching positions across the United States. Some experts predict that over the next decade 2 million teachers will need to be hired in the United States. The current workforce is graying and retiring early, just as class sizes are being reduced, they say. Do the math, the experts entreat: Smaller classes = more classes = additional teachers. Those are among the conclusions found in a recent Mississippi State study conducted by Peggy A. Swoger and Jack Blendinger that examined the impact of 1997-2000 state legislative policies on schools, teachers and students. Swoger directs the university’s World Class Teaching Program, while Blendinger is a professor of educational leadership. Mississippi, which just announced its 2002 list, ranks among the top 10 states nationally in the number—more than 1,400—of National Board of Professional Teaching-certified teachers. State legislative incentives for certification include a $6,000 annual supplement, reimbursement of fees for candidates who complete the effort and a statewide mentoring program available at MSU and five other universities. The year-long voluntary process for K-12 teachers is rigorous, requiring the development of an extensive instructional portfolio and the completion of a written test. During the time period covered by the MSU study, more than 1,000 Mississippi teachers earned certification.

The State Board may not adopt more stringent standards for approval of nonpublic schools than the accreditation standards applied to public schools. Miss. Code Ann. § 37-17-7. State accreditation is mandatory for nonpublic schools receiving state funds. Standards for accreditation are set out in the policy document, "Nonpublic School Accreditation Requirements of the State Board of Education, Third Edition, December 1998". Recordkeeping/Reports: Length of School Year/Day: Teacher Certification: Teacher certification is required for those schools that choose to be approved by the State Board of Education. "Nonpublic School Accreditation Requirements of the State Board of Education, Third Edition, 1998." Special Education: et seq Health: Safety: Home Schooling: Home schools meet the definition of "nonpublic schools", which means an institution for the teaching of children, consisting of a physical plant, whether owned or leased, including a home, instructional staff members and students, and which is in session each school year. Teacher Assessment/(MTAI) This is a time of transition in Mississippi for teacher assessment. While the objectives and requirements of the MTAI are still being taught, the state is in the process of developing another method of evaluation for teachers. There seem to be at least two alternate teacher assessment programs under consideration. One program is called Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium, or INTASC. The principles of INTASC can be read by following this link . The other assessment program is called the National Standards for Teacher Certification. Since there has not yet been a replacement for the MTAI, Gunn Education Materials Center will continue to make it and example portfolios available until advised to do otherwise by the School of Education and Psychology. Part of the process for teacher education and certification is to successfully complete the Mississippi Teaching Assessment Instruments, or MTAI for short. Gunn Education Materials Center has the MTAI document which details what is expected of the student. Gunn also has two help guides for the MTAI, as well as examples of portfolios for review.
