Standards for School Leaders

The ISLLC Standards for School Leaders were adopted by the Consortium in 1996 and are in use throughout the country. Currently, thirty-five states have either adopted or adapted the ISLLC Standards and are in different stages of implementing the Standards in reforming educational leadership within their state. All ISLLC projects are linked to and based on these Standards. Over 25,000 copies of the ISLLC Standards for School Leaders have been disseminated to date. The ISLLC Standards for School Leaders can be ordered from the CCSSO publications office at 202-336-7016 for $10. ISLLC Standards for School Leaders, Acrobat File

School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)
The School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) is a performance-based assessment for the licensure of new school principals and assistant or vice-principals. The assessment was developed by ISLLC and ETS. The SLLA is grounded in research and linked directly to the ISLLC Standards for School Leaders. In collaboration with ETS, six states from the Consortium funded and developed an assessment for the initial licensing of beginning principals. The (SLLA) began national administration in October 1998. Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, and North Carolina are using the SLLA for licensure, and several other states are in discussions with ISLLC and ETS to use the SLLA in their states. 2003 Legislative Update (as of 04/03/03) There are several serious issues for public health. The most important is HB 10, the DHSS's funding, which is now up to the Senate. Family planning funds are in serious trouble and need your help. Read our message on the bulletin board of the MoALPHA web site. The second funding issue is the protection of MC Plus funds. This is debated widely in the press, which may have a positive impact on the Senate's action. We'll see.

Action Planning Session
Each state participating in the "Safe Schools Within Safe Communities" regional seminar brought a team, if possible, so that they could take the first step towards developing a violence prevention action plan for their state. While the time available for the development of the plans was brief, states were able to identify some of their key issues, goals, and objectives. The outcomes are summarized in the following section. Action Plan Teams:
Iowa
Participants:
David Wright, Iowa Department of Education
Deb Synhorst, Iowa Department of Public Health
Jan Rose, Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse
Jim Tyson, Iowa Department of Education
Mary Sloan, Northwest Iowa Alcoholism and Drug Treatment Unit
Issue:
There is a lack of respect for human relationships by both youth and adults.
Goal:
To increase the skills and commitment for positive human relationships
Objective:
The representatives of the Prevention and Education Committee will develop an action plan for positive human relations. This committee will then present an action plan to the Governor's appointed Prevention and Education Council. Plans will be implemented in each department for compiling and listing resources, and for developing materials and providing technical assistance, as well as developing measurable outcomes. Each state department will then have an action plan that is a collaborative effort with all other departments.

Call for Examples: Virtual Schools We are working on a second edition of Virtual High Schools: State of the States that will provide a wider view of the field. The first edition, published in Spring 2000, can be found online at: http://www.cait.org/shared_resource_docs/vhs_files/vhs_study.pdf As part of this effort, we are compiling a list of virtual schools. Your assistance is requested in identifying existing and emerging virtual schools not in our initial list. For the purposes of this list, we define a "virtual school" as "an educational organization offering courses designed for K-12 learners through distance learning methods that include Web-based delivery." HYPERLINKED LISTING OF CURRENT SCHOOLS IDENTIFIED Below is the hyperlinked version of our current list. After reviewing the list, you may wish to go to the Virtual School List Survey web site, a site where you can suggest a school NOT YET LISTED or submit a comment, idea or lead about virtual schools. Please examine the listings below, BEFORE suggesting a virtual school through the Virtual School List Survey web site. WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED IN THE LIST...

The Virtual School List The Virtual School List includes only those entities which offer courses designed for K-12 learners and which offer at least some Internet- or Web-based credit courses . Using email, chat or support web sites (like many conventional college courses these days) isn't considered to constitute a "web-based course" in the context of this Virtual School List. Computer-based courses using CD-ROMs or software loaded on the student's computer for the main course delivery, another common method, is also not considered a "web-based course" application in this context. To suggest a new listing, go to the Virtual School Survey page. State-operated University-operated District-operated State charter schools ...
