Making Sense of the Change Missouri Children's Budget Watch Project Report
December 1996
Children are not sharing fully in Missouri's economic growth, according to Making Sense of the Change , a new report released by Citizens for Missouri's Children . The report documents expenditures over a six year period on children's services, including public education, health, services for abused and neglected children and nutrition. It also discusses the potential impact of the implementation of the new welfare law on children's services. The report found that:
  • While expenditures on children's programs in Missouri have increased 17% between 1990 and 1995, they have not kept pace with the state's economy, which grew 33% in the same period.
  • Compared to other states, Missouri spends a small amount per capita to fund children's programs. Missouri ranks 43rd on per capita spending for elementary and secondary education, and 32nd on spending for cash assistance, health care, child care and other services.
  • Missouri relies heavily on federal funds to maintain programs for children, especially in the areas of child protection, child nutrition and health. More than one- quarter of the state's total revenue comes from Washington.

Comprehensive Program – 2000 Statewide Partnerships/Coalitions
Statewide Advisory Board: In June 1999, the Missouri Cardiovascular Health (MCVH) Program established and continues to maintain through semi-annual meetings a Missouri Cardiovascular Health Advisory Board (MCVHAB) by partnering with other statewide stakeholders.
  • The purpose of the MCVHAB is to develop and maintain a statewide focus on cardiovascular health, physical activity and nutrition, provide advice and consultation on cardiovascular health issues, avoid duplication of effort, and serve as an external mechanism to leverage support and collaboration as well as assist with an inventory of policies and environmental conditions for physical activity, nutrition and other cardiovascular health (CVH) issues.
Advisory Board members represent various state agencies, including but not limited to MDOH (offices responsible for nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, diabetes, cancer, health education, minority health, Preventive Health Services Block Grant, public information, health standards and licensing, and data systems), Department of Agriculture, Department of Conservation, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health.

Some majors at College of the Ozarks also require a minor which is a smaller area of concentration (6 to 7 courses). Every bachelor degree candidate must complete a major. Students may also declare a minor or a second major. Students are expected to complete their program of study within a maximum of 10 semesters. A major may require up to 16 courses (3-5 credit hours per course), no more than 12 of which may be in a single discipline. No more than three classes can overlap between a first and second major. Welcome to the Mississippi State University's Family Nutrition Program home page. Our mission is to provide nutrition education to Food Stamp recipients and those individuals in Mississippi who are eligible for food stamps.
FNP in Mississippi is the Family Nutrition Program , a federally funded program with the purpose of improving the quality of life for persons of limited resources, specifically through educational programs structured to increase an individual's knowledge of food and nutrition, food buying and handling. FNP teaches food stamp recipients how to improve their dietary practices and become more effective managers of available food resources. Local FNP programs will identify target audiences and deliver, based on local needs, nutritional information to that limited resource audience. This process is facilitated by a collaborative partnership of the Mississippi State University Extension Service and agencies and organizations representing the needs of food stamp recipients. Some of the broad objectives of the FNP are:
  • to teach program participants nutrition principles, such as how to use the Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid.
