Building a Better Network Real challenges.
Real support.
With a small, but dedicated staff, MACA provides the support needed for Community Action Agencies to be as effective as possible. MACA works to ob tain state and federal funding that directly assists Missourians in climbing out of poverty and strengthening their families. Partnering with other organizations, MACA also advocates for the poor to improve services that help them find and keep jobs, obtain food and shelter and plan for their futures. Real support.
Real success.
Many strides were made last year to build a better network of Community Action Agencies serving the poor: Advocacy

    HCE Council Offers Two Scholarships
The Van Wert County Homemakers and Community Education Council is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships for college students. The scholarships are made possible with the help of the Van Wert Fruit Growers.
For the past seventeen years the Van Wert Fruit Growers has sponsored an annual Apple Festival in October. Three years ago the HCE Council was approached to be in charge of “The Bake Off” featuring apple products. This has enabled the HCE group to raise money to support the scholarships.
There will be two scholarships given away this year. Each will be for $200, which may be used for any expenses related to a college education. It is not restricted to tuition and/or books. The scholarship is open to upperclassman as well as freshmen, and adults who desire to obtain a college education. It is not necessary to be a Van Wert County resident to apply.
Application forms are available from high school guidance counselors, as well as the OSU Extension Office, 1055 South Washington Street, Van Wert. Applications must be completed and returned to this address by July 1, 2003.

The power of me... The Bootheel extension office has become a mainstay for the six-county area of Southeast Missouri it serves. Since 1992, the office has served thousands of families and individuals by collaborating with the Delmo Housing Corporation to provide information and workshops on quality of life issues. In addition, the Kids Beat Program provides educational and recreational opportunities for thousands of limited resource youths each year. The Demonstration Farm serves as an one acre teaching facility for limited resource and minority farm families seeking economic self-sufficiency. Many families have received valuable hands-on training in crop management on the farm which has helped them increase the profitability of their enterprises. For More Information, Contact: Emma Walker

2003 Status Report Spring Training Institute 2002 Missouri Student Survey Missouri Prevention Needs Assessment Division Overview The Division plans and funds prevention, treatment and rehabilitation programs for alcohol and other drug abuse-a problem that costs the state's ecomomy an estimated $6 billion a year in lost productivity, healthcare expenditures, property damage, and crime. During the last year Division-funded programs provided treatment or intervention to 67,000 individuals. The division, established within the department in 1975, became a statutory entity with passage of the Omnibus Mental Health Act in 1980. The division provides funding for prevention, outpatient, residential, and detoxification services to community-based programs that work with communities to develop and implement comprehensive coordinated plans. The division provides technical assistance to these agencies and operates a certification program that sets standards for treatment programs, qualified professionals, and alcohol and drug related educational programs.
