A Black Perspective of American History By Leon Dixon, Gerald Hynes, and Carolyn Gaines Nelson Part Four: The Ante-Bellum South (18001860) The ante-bellum south was primarily an agrarian way of life. Slavery had long since taken root and anti-slavery sentiments were being heard in the North from the abolitionists. The southern people were constantly being harassed by the Indians, and fear of slave insurrections combined to make them uneasy. With sparsely populated territories and the plantation being primarily the population centers, the task of protection fell upon the people or plantations themselves. The consequent arming of themselves led to a self-defense, take-the-law-into-your-own-hands type of atmosphere, reminiscent of sparsely settled frontier towns and ranches, where each plantation was as a town within itself. The South was caught unprepared militarily for the war of independence. The North viewed slavery and Indian harassment as southern liabilities during the war and asserted that it was the assistance of the North that was responsible for the successes in the South. Whereas, the South considered and cited the heroic sacrifices of its people as the reasons. All in all, the inadequacy of the South's defenses at the war's outbreak, and the lack of sufficient support from the North caused the South to strive to be ever ready for military confrontation. Aaron Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton (who was born in the West Indies and had African ancestry) to a duel. Hamilton shot in the air, not wanting to harm Burr, but was mortally wounded in return. It was unfortunate incidences by dueling such as these, involving important figures, that ultimately brought about the downfall of this dastardly activity.

Separate But Equal?
The issue: Does the Constitution allow states to segregate schools or other public facilities on the basis of race or sex? Introduction The issue of whether public facilities may be segregated based on race first arose in the context of transportation, not education. In the 1896 case of Plessy v Ferguson , the Supreme Court concluded that a Louisiana law requiring whites and blacks to ride in separate railroad cars did not violate the Equal Protection Clause. In an opinion that reads as though written by someone from Mars, Justice Brown wrote that the law did not "stamp the colored race with a badge of inferiority" and that any such suggestion is "soley because the colored race chooses to place that construction on it." In a famous and eloquent dissent in Plessy , Justice John Harlan argued, "Our Constitution is color blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among its citizens." Beginning in the 1930s, the NAACPunder the leadership of African-American attorney Charles Hamilton Houston began its assault on the "separate but equal" doctrine announced in Plessy. Houston chose to concentrate his efforts on segregation in public education, where he thought the adverse effects of the enforced racial separation could be most easily demonstrated. In 1938, Houston persuaded the Supreme Court that Missouri's refusal to provide legal education for blacks within its own borders (Missouri sent its qualified black law students to neighboring states' schools, paying the tuition) denied blacks the equal protection of the laws. In subsequent victories in the Court, the NAACP gave teeth to the "equal" part of separate but equal: states would have to ensure that separate educational programs were truly equal in terms of resources, reputation, and other measures.

Reference form M anuscript repositories hold unique sources for genealogists, but these documents (also known as primary sources ) generally are not the best place to start finding ancestors. Unfortunately, the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia (WHMC-C) does not hold many government/public records that genealogists commonly use to locate their family. Once names and dates of ancestors are known, then genealogists are able to embark on their family history in manuscript collections.
S imply stated, manuscripts put history into genealogy research. Primary sources, in a sense, help make ancestors come to life. The letters, diaries, memoirs, and photographs provide a glimpse into the past where historians can learn and understand the innermost thoughts and feelings of the people that lived before us. Genealogists may find love letters between great-grandparents that describe their courtship days or diaries that express political views, religious beliefs, or the adversities experienced by an immigrant. Diaries are wonderful sources for understanding the day-to-day events that shaped an ancestor's life. Manuscript repositories may have early business records that explain how people worked, how much they were paid, or what products they made or bought. Records of clubs or other organizations may reveal an ancestor's interests and the actions they took to better themselves or their society. Family historians may learn about communities and neighborhoods by researching documents created in the places where family members lived. Manuscript sources provide the stories that help descendants relive the hardships and hopes and the ups and downs of an ancestor's day-to-day life. These

Two Rockwood Schools Gain National Recognition
St. Louis, May 22, 2002 - Two Rockwood School District schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. Rockwood Valley Middle and Lafayette High are two of six Missouri schools to receive the honor. The Rockwood School District is the only district in Missouri to have two schools recognized this year.
This is the 19th year of the program, which spotlights some of the nation's most successful schools. Blue Ribbon schools share several characteristics, including; a clear vision and shared sense of mission, a challenging, up-to-date curriculum, policies and practices to ensure a safe campus conducive to learning, evidence of family involvement and a commitment to help all students achieve high standards.

Robert Wright Armstrong, railroad executive, soldier, and musician, son of Walter David and Mary Elizabeth (Wright) Armstrong, was born in Brownwood, Texas, on December 18, 1892. He received his education in the Brownwood public schools, at Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Missouri, and at the Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri. He played in the school bands at Brownwood and at the Missouri Military Academy, where he also directed the band and orchestra. After graduation he performed with the Kryl Concert Band, the Honey Boy Evans Minstrels, and the Al G. Fields Minstrels. When he was tired of performing he moved to the Neil O'Brien Minstrels to become first the assistant manager and then the manager. Later, while working as manager of the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce (1919-24), he organized the Old Gray Mare Band, which became the official band of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. qv Although he joined the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce after World War I, qv Armstrong did not remain there for long.
