Interview: Professor George Kennedy, University of Missouri School of Journalism
    by John Tarleton
April 1999 News Reporting and Writing , one of the most successful journalism textbooks ever published. Kennedy, 57, graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1964 and worked as a news reporter at The Wilmington (Del.) News-Journal and the The Miami Herald before returning in 1974 to join the Journalism School faculty. "Doing journalism is to me a very rewarding and challenging intellectual and emotional enterprise," he says. "And we do that on a daily basis." Kennedy has been the Managing Editor of The Columbia Missourian for the past nine years and has lectured in various countries including Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Turkey and Nigeria. At once relaxed and authoritative, he is an effective spokesman for the goals and the values of the world's oldest journalism school. Are the flaws of American journalism rooted in its dependent relationship to Capitalism? Or, are they due to poor judgment on the part of individual editors and reporters? Do new on-line technologies represent a threat or an opportunity for traditional newspapers? Returning to the journalism school I had graduated from 10 years earlier, I was eager to pin him down on these and other questions. It was a more difficult task than I had imagined.

MU Health Sciences Center to operate Heart of Missouri beginning June 1
COLUMBIA, Mo. The University of Missouri Health Sciences Center on June 1 will assume management of Heart of Missouri Mental Health Services, an outpatient program composed of 10 counseling centers located throughout central Missouri. The finalized contract culminates several months of discussions between MU and the Missouri Department of Mental Health, which has operated the program from administrative offices based at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center in Columbia. The contract with the Health Sciences Center is part of a statewide initiative by DMH to privatize outpatient services. Since DMH selected MU to manage Heart of Missouri, the organizations have been working together to address transition-related matters, including financial preparations, employee issues and communications with clients about the changes. As part of the transfer, the counseling center in Columbia will move from Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center to University Physicians at Green Meadows. The centers located in the other nine counties will remain in their current locations. In addition to Columbia, the facility operates community counseling centers in Carrollton, Keytesville, Boonville, Fayette, California, Versailles, Sedalia, Moberly and Marshall.

Boosting the public's understanding of arthritis aim of project
By Rachel Young Arthritis affects one of every six Americans, from schoolkids to baby boomers to grandparents. Although arthritis and related diseases are the leading cause of disability for Americans of all ages, many persons believe arthritis affects only the elderly. To boost the public understanding of arthritis, its impacts and treatment is the goal of an ongoing MARRTC project. Current efforts include a web site and a quarterly newsletter. A national press conference and a community forum on arthritis are planned. MARRTC, the Missouri Arthritis Research Rehabilitation and Training Center, conducts research and sponsors education programs to prevent and manage disability among people with arthritis. The "Journalism Dissemination Project" is one of eight federally funded MARRTC projects. The dissemination project's goals to increase arthritis news coverage and improve its content is aided by the location of the project's office - inside the University of Missouri School of Journalism, says Dr. Robert Logan, who is the project's principal investigator.

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

    SURVEY
In February of this year, State Librarian Ben Wakashige asked leaders in the education and library profession to come together to create a task force to discuss the status of libraries in New Mexico's schools. Members of the New Mexico Task Force on School Libraries have concluded that a survey of all public schools was the first step in determining what is needed to improve all school libraries. The survey will assess staffing, training needs, technology and facilities, and funding for materials. The survey is being sent to all public schools to collect information on the current status of libraries and media centers. In a landmark 1993 study called "Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement" carried out in Colorado by Keith Curry Lance, Lynda Welborn, and Christine Hamilton-Pennell, clearly established a direct relationship between student academic achievement and expenditures in the school's library media program. Recently, an expanded study showed that reading scores were five to ten points higher in schools with well funded, well staffed, and well integrated media centers over schools in which this was not the case. Using these findings, the New Mexico Task Force on School Libraries hopes to address the large issue of better education in New Mexico. Information from the survey will be used by the State Department of Education, the New Mexico State Library, the New Mexico Library Association, and the New Mexico Legislature to establish a profile for the current state of school libraries in New Mexico.
