It was introduced to the ancient Olympics in the eighth century BC after the Spartans complained that too many Olympic events favoured civilians and did nothing to reward the skills of the warrior. In those days the sport was an elimination event featuring five disciplines: discus, spear throwing, long jump, running and wrestling. The idea was that weaker competitors were progressively eliminated until just two remained to wrestle for the title. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympics, obviously liked the idea and was keen to incorporate a similar event in the Games.

Modern Pentathlon
The modern pentathlon was introduced at the 1912 Olympics as a test of military skillsor, at least, the skills that were traditionally taught at military academies of the time. It was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the chief founder of the modern Olympic Games. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall. Scoring was originally based on a competitor's placing in the various events, with the lowest score winning. It's now based on a scoring table similar to the one used in track and field for the decathlon. Standards are set for each event and a competitor receives 1,000 points for equalling the standard. Points are added if the standard is exceeded and subtracted if the performance falls below the standard. The events have changed somewhat since 1912. The equestrian event, originally a 5,000-meter cross-country ride against time, is now a 400-meter stadium jumping course. The swimming event has been cut from 300 meters to 200 meters, the cross-country running event from 4,000 meters to 3,000 meters. The shooting event, originally a 22-caliber pistol shot from 25 meters at a turning target, has become a 10-meter air pistol shot at a stationary target.

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

    By Harry Peart
BBC sports correspondent in Mexico City A meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Mexico has ended with a short stay of execution for three sports threatened with expulsion from future games. The future of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon will be reviewed after the Athens Olympics in 2004. IOC president Jacques Rogge had wanted a quick decision
An IOC report had recommended that the three sports should be removed from the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but a decision was delayed after dissent by the members. Baseball, softball and modern pentathlon now have less than two years to convince the IOC that they are worthy of a place in the Olympic programme and they could still be cast aside for the Beijing Games. The IOC president, Jacques Rogge, has been pressing for an early decision and even suggested that the issue should be taken by senior officials of the executive board.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. IOC members attending a conference this weekend were confident the group will keep three sports targeted for elimination from the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee is scheduled to discuss dropping baseball, softball and modern pentathlon this week during a meeting in Mexico City. Members of the General Association of International Sports Federations discussed the proposal during a conference here Thursday through Sunday. Most thought those sports will stay in the Olympics or that a vote will be put off at least until next year. "There are some pressures not to do it, not only from the three federations, but all the federations in general because we have the feeling the procedure was a bit rushed," said Denis Oswald, a member of the IOC and the GAISF council. The Olympic Program Commission recommended in August that the three sports be dropped after the 2004 Games. It also recommended adding golf and rugby.

    Reuters
MEXICO CITY The head of modern pentathlon, one of the oldest Olympic sports, said on Monday that the IOC would be voting against its "soul" if it decided to throw the sport out of the Summer Games this week. Speaking as International Olympic Committee (IOC) members started to gather for a meeting where they could scrap three sports from the Games for the first time since 1936, Klaus Schormann said he had received a lot of support in his campaign to save modern pentathlon, introduced into the Games in 1912. The sport's Olympic future is under threat together with baseball and softball as IOC president Jacques Rogge looks to scale down the Games after decades of expansionism under his predecessor Juan Antonio Samaranch. "I have talked to more than 80 IOC members and they have been very supportive. They say the sport is the soul of the Olympic movement. It is part of our moment and they support that," the International Modern Pentathlon Federation (UIPM) president said in an interview.
