Modern Pentathlon First Olympic Appearance: 1912 (men); 2000 (women)
by Mike Morrison THE MODERN pentathlon is made up of five individual sports - shooting fencing swimming horse show jumping , and running . Sounds like a pretty weird combination, huh?
Did You Know?
American George Patton (yes, that George Patton) was a strong challenger for the modern pentathlon gold in 1912 but faltered in the shooting competition.
As the story goes, a young French officer in Napoleon's army was sent on an unfamiliar horse to deliver a message into hostile territory. He was first greeted by an enemy soldier with his sword drawn. The two dueled . The French officer won the battle and continued on his horse until it was shot out from under him. He fired a shot with his pistol and killed the enemy but his horse didn't make it. He swam across a river and ran the rest of the way to deliver his message. When he arrived, his commanding officer greeted him with, "What took you?"
The modern pentathlon used to be drawn out over anywhere from four to six days. Beginning with the Atlanta games in

Modern Pentathlon
Pentathlons are Olympic competitions consisting of a collection of five athletic events. The highest scorer in all events is the winner. The modern-day men's pentathlon tests participants' survival skills over a course of five days and includes an 800-meter obstacle course on horses, an fencing match, air pistol shooting, a 300-meter swim, and a 4,000-meter cross-country run. The women's pentathlon, which today is actually a heptathlon, is held for two days and includes 100-meter hurdles, the shot put, the high jump, the long jump, the 200-meter sprint, the javelin, and the 800-meter run. This section focuses on modern Olympic pentathlons.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

Prospects look good to keep baseball, softball, modern penathlon in Olympics By STEPHEN WILSON, Associated Press
MEXICO CITY (November 23, 2002 1:21 p.m. EST) - It's been 66 years since a sport was eliminated from the Olympics. Don't expect any changes when Olympic leaders meet starting Monday to consider dropping three sports at once.
Three months after baseball, softball and modern pentathlon were proposed for exclusion after the 2004 Athens Games, it looks increasingly unlikely that the International Olympic Committee will vote them out.
There might not even be a vote when the IOC meets through Friday in Mexico City.
A combination of factors - legal and technical complaints about the voting process, a successful lobbying campaign by the endangered federations and a lack of enthusiasm for change - appears to have ensured the sports' Olympic survival.
For now, at least.
"I think they will be able to save their skin," said Denis Oswald, a member of the IOC executive board and head of the association representing all summer Olympic sports.
IOC president Jacques Rogge said all options are open, including scrapping the vote, postponing it until next year or changing the proposal to apply to the 2012 Olympics instead of 2008.

Even the horses are taken care of By JENNIFER COOKE
11:31PM, Sep 28 Olympic sports fans would not recognise the pitch at the Sydney Baseball Stadium two days after the United States beat Cuba for the gold medal. Where batters for the past week slid to bases before the home stretch, 15 showjumping obstacles were erected yesterday to the most technically difficult standards. The modern pentathletes will aim to pass over them faultlessly this weekend. At 2 pm todaythe 48 men and women to compete in one of the most demanding Olympic pursuits will view the horse-riding course for the first time. Riders from Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, where horses bought specifically for Sydney's Olympic modern pentathlon are usually stabled, will test their mounts over 1.2metre high jumps. The pentathletes will be watching closely.
