Teaching Interests
Tourism, urban and economic geographies.
Research Interests
Impacts (environmental, economic and social and political and relational) following the creation of tourism destinations. Issues that surround the sustainable development of tourism destinations. French Pacific (Tahiti and its Islands, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna) tourism issues. My research interests lie in analysing the geographic context within which tourism destinations are developed. Certain destinations I have found fascinating because of their particular contexts: why would an American entertainment company believe that its product could succeed in a foreign environment and why would it be helped by that country's government? The project seemed to be an abysmal failure 20 months after its opening but its owners could not afford to shut it down. What was really happening? That question led to some of the articles I have published and to others that are still gestating. Another resort, which has been financially successful, has had to deal with a public relations hassle and with protracted litigation from surrounding townships. Foxwoods Casino Resort's contextual relations are very different from those of Disneyland Paris but have been just as fascinating to study. In the case of Foxwoods (located in Connecticut), two cultural groups have diverging perspectives that have proven more difficult to reconcile than in the case of Disneyland Paris.

Geography
The principality of Monaco is an "independent" nation state situated on the French Riviera near Italy and lying some 985 kilometers south east of Paris. It is approximately 2 square kilometers in size and after the Holy See is the smallest country in the world. Monaco is hilly, rugged and rocky with its highest point standing at 140 meters above sea level. The capital is at Monaco-Ville. Despite its size the Principality can be subdivided into 5 zones of which the most famous is Monte Carlo. The climate is mild with the Principality enjoying more than 300 days of sunshine a year; the average temperature is 8.2°C in winter and 25.5°C in summer. Monaco (like France) is on Greenwich Mean Time plus one hour in the winter and Greenwich Mean Time plus two hours in the summer. Nice airport is 22 kilometres away and can be reached by car in 30 minutes or by a special helicopter link in 6 minutes .From Nice there are regular direct flights to major European, North American and Asian cities. The Monaco-Monte Carlo (SNFC) railway station is a stop for many trains covering international routes. Access roads connect to the A8 motorway which links up with the entire European transport system.

Monaco: an ancient principality steeped in a rich and colorful history, is considered by many to be Europe's most fascinating country. Though the Principality covers but one square mile, it stands as a proud monarchy with his Serene Highness Prince Rainier III as its head of state. Today people visit Monaco and its glittering district Monte-Carlo not simply to vacation, not just to test their standing with lady luck, nor merely to see and be seen, but to revel in the memorable life-enhancing experience that is Monaco.
Independent, but reduced to its borders of the Middle Ages and deprived of the resources of Roquebrune and Menton, the Principality then decided to base its economic development on what was not yet known as "tourism" and to exploit to this end all the advantages which Nature had unstintingly given it: a setting whose beauty was already famous, a climate of exceptional mildness (the average temperature for the year is 16.31 degrees and a great amount of sunshine (1.583 hours) on average per year.
To exploit these advantages, it was first of all necessary to display them, make them known and enliven them : a gaming house, the "Soci©t© des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers" (The Sea Bathing and Circle of Foreigners Company) was set up and the monopoly of its use was granted in 1863 to Fran§ois Blanc. Under his guidance the name of Monaco became synonymous with fortune, gaming, holidays and travel. Luxury and refinement too since appeal could be made to the greatest names of the era, in particular to Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera House, for the building of the Casino.
