The Dodge Monaco
The Monaco was a C-body car from '65 thru about '76; there was a C-body Royal Monaco also from '75 to '77. There were also B-body Monacos in '77-'78 (rebadged Coronets). (The Eagle Premier-based Monaco in the early '90s was a completely different car. When the Monaco was first introduced in 1965, it was only offered as a 2 door hardtop in the US (Canada had Monaco convertibles as well, but these were never offered in the US). It appears to have been conceived as a specialty hardtop along the lines of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Starfire. This solo offering was the top of the Dodge line in '65; other C-body Dodges following included the Custom 880, Polara 500, and Polara. The Monaco was most readily distinguished from lesser C-body Dodges by its unique taillight treatment, a tradition that continued as long as there were C-body Monacos. The Custom 880 was dropped in '66 and the Monaco line expanded to offer most of the former Custom 880 body styles (all except the convertible and 6-window four door sedan). A Monaco 500 two door hardtop was introduced to take the place of the original Monaco at this time, accompanied again by a Canada-only Monaco 500 convertible.

The Eagle Premier, Dodge Monaco, and Medallion
Historical Overview (Eagle Premier / Dodge Monaco)
The once-independent American Motors Corporation (AMC), struggling to create a market identity after the demise of their Nash and Rambler labels, came up with small but very heavy cars with available 4WD (Eagle), forerunners of the late-80s bubble-style little cars (Pacer), and fast, furious experimental cars with high-performance engines (AMX). But it was all to no avail, and Renault ended up buying AMC, partly to sell their own cars in the American market. Their attempt failed, and Chrysler, under "buy and sell" Iaccoca, bought AMC. This move, though widely regarded as stupid at the time (probably by the same analysts who loved the Daimler-Chrysler merger), gave Chrysler one of its two biggest moneymakers: Jeep. When Chrysler bought AMC, it agreed to sell a certain number of Renaults. (Iaccoca also reportedly promised not to end the AMC name, which he did shortly after the sale went through. Instead of AMC, he chose the name Eagle for the division, after the 4,000 pound 4WD-capable, bulging-tired, oddly-styled AMC which can still be found in snowy and hilly areas. The Eagle's sister, the AMC Concord, eventually found a namesake in a Chrysler LH car). The Premier itself was not totally discontinued; its design was adapted into the LH.

History and Government
History: The history of Monaco is inseparable from that of the House of Grimaldi. Originally of Genoese extraction, the Grimaldis rose to prominence during the 12th century, when one member of the family became ambassador both to the court of the German Emperor Frederick II (Barbarossa) and to that of his Byzantine counterpart, Manuel Commenus. In the late 13th century, however, with the Holy Roman Empire riven by internal strife, the Grimaldi family was forced to take refuge in Provence. It was François Grimaldi who led a group of partisans into the fortress of Monaco in 1297, which has been ruled by the family ever since, the Grimaldis preserving their independence through a mixture of good luck and cunning diplomacy.
Government: The government of the principality is controlled by the hereditary ruler Prince Rainier III, under whom executive authority is exercised by a Minister of State. The Monegasque electorate elects the 18-member

Monaco - Monte Carlo History The Rock of Monaco was a shelter for primitive populations. Traces of their occupation were discovered in a cave in the Saint-Martin Gardens. The first sedentary inhabitants of the region, the Ligures, are described as a mountain people, accustomed to hard work and an exemplary frugality. The coast and the port of Monaco were probably the sea access for the interior Ligurian population, the Oratelli of Peille. The origin of the name "Monaco" has been subject to several hypotheses. For some, the name comes from the Ligurian tribe, the Monoïkos, who inhabited the Rock in the 6th century B.C. For others, the origin comes from the Greek. In antiquity, the port of Monaco was associated with the cult of the hero Herakles (Hercules for the Romans), and his name was often linked to the expression "Herakles Monoïkos," which means Herakles alone. This version seems to bear out, as the modern name for Monaco's main port is the Port of Hercules. At the end of the 12th century B.C., the Romans occupied the region. Monaco is part of the Province of the Maritime Alps. During their occupation, the Romans erected at La Turbie, the Trophy of Augustus, which celebrates the triumph of their military campaigns. During this same period, Phoenecian and Carthaginian sailors brought prosperity to the region. After the fall of the Roman Empire (5th century A.D.), the region was regularly sacked by different barbarian populations. It was only at the end of the X century, after the expulsion of the Sarrasins by the Count of Provence, that the coast slowly became repopulated.

    HISTORY
Monaco's history is pretty much the history of the Grimaldi family (see Royal Family). The country is their private playground, and they are its raison d'etre - a 1918 treaty with France states that, should the Grimaldis die out, Monaco will become an autonomous state of France. The area which is now Monaco has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Legend has it that during the Roman era a young Corsican Christian named Dévote was executed and her body placed in a boat for Africa. The boat drifted off course and ran aground on the coast of modern-day Monaco, where a state was founded in her honour. The first serious spate of building in the area - the perimeters of today's Princes Palace - was undertaken by the Ligurians, a Ghibelline Genovese dynasty which ruled Monaco in the 13th century. But on 8 January 1297 the first of the Grimaldis, François, snuck into the citadel behind the backs of the Ghibellines and scored his heirs 700 years' worth of easy living. In 1489 King Charles VIII of France recognized Monaco's independence. Although they were leading separate lives, and despite Monaco's brief flirtation with Spanish dominance between 1524 and 1641, France and Monaco remained close. Eventually, however, France's possessive nature got the better of it, and in 1793 the new Revolutionary regime annexed Monaco. A treaty signed in 1861 reinstated Monaco's independence, and bickering in recent decades has been restricted to the question of tax laws - Monaco refuses to tax French residents or French companies with their headquarters in Monaco.

At various times, they were to be found allied with almost every power in the region, particularly during the Italian Wars in the late-15th and early-16th centuries when Monaco's geographical position left them ideally placed to either help or hinder the repeated and largely unsuccessful attempts by the kings of France to conquer the peninsula. This Machiavellian approach - indeed, Machiavelli himself was in Monaco in the early 16th century to sign a treaty on behalf of Florence - paid dividends in 1612 when Honoré II was granted the title of prince by the French crown. He signed a treaty of friendship with France, and the principality remained independent from that time on, despite a brief interruption during the French Revolution.

    Royalty in Monaco
The Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco for more than 700 years. The country gained its current constitution in 1911 during the reign of Prince Albert I. He was succeeded in 1922 by his son, French army general Prince Louis II. Shortly before his death in 1949, Louis was succeeded by his grandson, Rainier III, who is still on the throne. No mere figurehead, the monarch wields a great deal of power in Monaco. The tiny principality became world famous in 1956 when Prince Rainier married American movie star Grace Kelly. Their only son, Prince Albert, is the heir to the throne. Prince Albert is not married. According to changes made to the constitution in 2002, if Prince Albert does not have children, on his death the throne will pass to his sister Princess Caroline. Next in the order of succession are Caroline's children, Andrea Casiraghi, Pierre Casiraghi, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Princess Alexandra of Hanover; followed by Caroline's younger sister, Princess Stephanie, and Stephanie's legitimate children, Louis Ducruet and Pauline Ducruet.

    HISTORY
Founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa, Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, except when under French control from 1789 to 1814. Designated as a protectorate of Sardinia from 1815 until 1860 by the Treaty of Vienna, Monaco's sovereignty was recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. The Prince of Monaco was an absolute ruler until a constitution was promulgated in 1911. In July 1918, a treaty was signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty, written into the Treaty of Versailles, established that Monegasque policy would be aligned with French political, military, and economic interests. Prince Rainier III, the current ruler of Monaco, acceded to the throne following the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II, in 1949. The current heir apparent, Prince Albert, was born in 1958. A new constitution, proclaimed in 1962, abolished capital punishment, provided for female suffrage, and established a Supreme Court to guarantee fundamental liberties. In 1993, Monaco became an official member of the United Nations with full voting rights.

History and status of the principality of Monaco
The Principality is the second smallest sovereign state in the world (the smallest being Vatican ), with an area of 151 hectares, and the most crowded one. The early history of Monaco is linked to the Genoese civil wars between the Guelphs (supporting the Pope) and the Ghibellines (supporting the German Emperor). In 1297, the Guelph Rainier Grimaldi captured Monaco's rock from the Ghibellines and founded a dynasty, even if he was not able to keep Monaco for a long time.
In 1342, Charles Grimaldi, from the same family, proclaimed himself Lord of Monaco, and bought in 1346 the seigniories of Roquebrune and Menton.
