Who Invented It? When?
Chinese Inventions An Introductory Activity
Introduction
A common stereotype is that the Chinese traditionally lack scientific and technological ability, although, somehow, they stumbled upon papermaking, printing, gunpowder, and the mariner's compass. Modern Chinese, themselves, sometimes are surprised to realize that modern agriculture, shipping, astronomical observatories, decimal mathematics, paper money, umbrellas, wheelbarrows, multi-stage rockets, brandy and whiskey, the game of chess, and much more, all came from China. This information has been compiled by the work of Joseph Needham and his collegues in a study of ancient Chinese books on science, technology and medicine. His research has been published in the massive, and yet to be completed, multi-volume Science and Civilisation in China. Some of Needham's work has been condensed in a well-illustrated and informative book by Robert Temple ( The Genius of China: 3,000 Years of Science, Discovery, and Invention.

By Mary Bellis Creative ideas come from our minds, and inventions are the physical manifestation of those ideas. The part of intellectual property law that covers inventions is patents - granted by a government office (i.e. USPTO) after reviewing an inventor's application, an application that describes your new machine or process and what it can do. The Three Types of Patents: Utility patents protect useful processes, machines, articles of manufacture, and compositions of matter, or improvements to any of the above. Examples: fiber optics, computer hardware, medications. Design patents guard the unauthorized use of new, original, and ornamental designs for articles of manufacture.

WYCINANKI: A MATH/ART LESSON IN SYMMETRY
    GRADES: 3-6
Wycinanki, Polish paper cut designs, are symmetrical.
    MATERIALS:
    • construction paper 12x18
    • scissors
    • glue
    • pencils
    • authentic examples or reproductions of Wycinanki
    METHOD:
  • Share with the students the following historical reference: Farming families in Poland in the early 19th century used brightly colored Wycinanki to decorate their homes before Easter. They show that intricate details can be created using basic materials. Wycinanki are cut with sheep shears with no preliminary sketching. Cut from folded paper, they are always symmetrical. Their subject matter reflects the Polish countryside and includes trees, flowers, roosters, birds, and sometimes men and women. There are many styles of Wycinanki found in the different regions of Poland.
  • Activity: After students have looked at examples and discussed the characteristics of Wycinanki, they will create their own paper cut designs. Each student will use a sheet of 12x18 paper. It should be folded in half lengthwise, and students will draw their designs first with pencil. They will then carefully cut out their designs. Completed pictures should be mounted on black paper (12x18).
  • Questions to ask during the lesson:
    • What things in our world are symmetrical?
