Money Management
When your children receive birthday money or their allowance, do they spend it all on bubble gum and yo-yos, or do they save it for a more expensive item they want? Habits established when young are hard to shake; therefore, teaching your children sound money management skills early can get them started on the right path. For each age, there are appropriate ways to learn money skills. In general, involve your children in discussions about money and create an environment where they can ask questions. Preschool Children
Because young children don't understand abstract ideas, use concrete techniques to introduce money concepts.
  • Have children pay for an item at a store to show that money is exchanged for goods. Encourage saving by giving your child a fun piggy bank, like one that plays music when a coin is deposited.

Summer Jobs Teach Kids About Money And Time Management
Children can benefit from summer jobs in countless ways depending on their individual development and the opportunities around them, according to Lynn White, a Texas Agricultural Extension Service family economist specialist. White said many children begin earning money as early as 9 and 12 years old. She said, however, most occupations require a child to be at least 14 due to health and safety codes. Other jobs require them to be at least 18 or 21, depending upon whether they are around hazardous equipment, serving alcohol or driving while on the job. White said good first jobs range from babysitting, mowing yards, running errands, having a paper route, and washing cars to utilizing personal computer skills.

The 2001 very well , 46 percent fairly well ), and most think they do a good job of managing their money (25 percent think they do an excellent job and 57 percent think they do a good job). Yet, many of their actions and behaviors contradict this self-assessment. For instance, 55 percent of parents roll over credit card debt each month. When asked where they would put or advise their child to put $5,000 to save for education or some other long-term goal, 58 percent do not identify specific long-term investment vehicles such as mutual funds or stocks that historically offer higher rates of return. Instead, more than 1 out of 3 parents cite low-yielding certificates of deposit (CDs), savings accounts, and savings bonds. Twelve percent say they would put savings in a bank or savings and loan, but are unable to articulate a specific type of account. Finally, less than half (45 percent) of all parents say they make a budget and stick to it most of the time. “Our 1999

AMERICAN EXPRESS GRANTS HALF A MILLION DOLLARS TO FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAMS MINNEAPOLIS, June 26, 2002 The American Express Foundation announced today that it has awarded $500,000 dollars from its Economic Independence Fund to 18 non-profit organizations across the United States. Each of the organizations receiving an Economic Independence Fund grant will use the funds over a one-or-two year period to offer training for financial literacy programs or to teach direct financial literacy education to under-served population groups, including the newly employed, young workers, individuals moving from welfare to work and immigrants. Research by the American Savings Education Council revealed that more than 10 million American families lack even a basic checking or savings account at a bank or financial institution. The American Savings Education Council said this costs these families a lot of money because they often pay high fees for check cashing and bill payment services, while also being deprived of the ability to establish credit. The 18 Economic Independence Fund grants , which range from $15,700 to $30,000, will be used by individual grantees to help advance the financial literacy of the target populations they serve. For example, City Team Ministries in San Jose Calif. will offer money management classes to teach individuals recovering from substance abuse how to manage taxes, balance a checkbook, budget for everyday expenses, and to save for long-term goals such as buying a home.

This site is designed to help you teach 6-12 graders to manage money. The need for such practical instruction is a serious one. Both test scores and the current money management behavior of young people prove that they lack the basics in this, one of the most important areas of their lives. And because the facts about a great many Americans' spending and saving habits are troublesome, many adults appear ill-equipped to teach their offspring. Consequently, while young people may look to their parents as role models, our nation's adults may not have the mentoring skills needed to give our youth good financial habits. Two cases in point:
    • 34% of Americans have not even begun to prepare for retirement. And 55% say that the major obstacle to saving is a continuing focus on today's expenses rather than their financial future.*
As a country, we have to reverse this trend. We have designed The Mint to help you lay the groundwork for a responsible approach to teaching students about personal money management. You'll find that The Mint is divided into two major areas: pages for students and pages for mentors, teachers and parents.
