Mainly through the outreach of our radio broadcast, "Money Matters," we have discovered that a large segment of our listening audience needs financial counseling. If financial counseling is needed, callers are directed to trained counselors in their region or local area. Area churches, nonprofits, and organizations provide the counseling opportunities; and counselors meet at local churches, under the authority of the local church, in a private setting to receive practical help in managing money. It is this pervasiveness that allows us to turn the tables on our own children and use daily life to teach math. Better yet, our children may not even realize they're learning! Board Games: Card Games: Basic games such as Go Fish teach young children number recognition. More complex games, such as Rummy or Standoff (War), build on earlier skills and teach sequence, place value, and strategy. Puzzles: Jigsaw puzzles are another excellent tool for teaching math skills. Basic puzzles teach about spatial reasoning, and some teach shapes and sizes. Children also use such skills as sequence and sorting to put puzzles together. Building Blocks: Grocery Shopping: The grocery store offers a cornucopia of learning experiences. In the fresh produce department, children can learn about weights, measures, and comparisons. How many apples does it take to make a pound? Which weighs more: five potatoes or five lemons? Children can also practice basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and estimation. Which costs more: 7 ounces of peanut butter for $1.50 or 12 ounces for $3.00? How much have we spent so far? How many meals can we prepare for our family with this box? The bill came to $35.78. If I give the cashier $40, how much change will I get back? We've all known for a long time about soap and shampoo bottles that can be put to use in the classroom holding glue, water, whatever . Having just started wearing contact lenses, we've discovered another: the cleaning solution bottle. Smaller in size than soap bottles, with a flip top cap that won't get lost, these are great for glue, but you may want to use a small drill bit or a red-hot nail to make the hole larger. Anyone who wears contact lenses goes through this solution regularly, so have them save the bottles for you. Popcorn Day
Reward your students with popcorn when they finally make it through their multiplication tables, to illustrate how steam and pressure can have explosive results, as an incentive to go one day without getting in trouble in the lunchroom or simply because it's Friday. Posted on Sun, Nov. 03, 2002 Budgeting classes teach the basics of saving and getting out of debt
By GENE MEYER
The Kansas City Star

Until a couple of years ago, Vincent and Erica Wyatt of Independence had no idea how far they could stretch their money. Covering the needs of a growing family and keeping ahead of the bills seemed a big enough challenge. The future seemed uncertain. "We didn't think we had any money to save," Erica Wyatt recalled. They began learning differently at a budgeting class they went to as part of a homebuying program. One year later, with a bit of financial basic training and a lot of determination, the Wyatts had wiped out several thousand dollars of debt and saved enough for a $2,000 down payment on a three-bedroom home in the suburbs with a big yard and a playhouse for their children, Marcellus, Mirissa and Joslin. "You don't realize how much you can spend without thinking," Vincent Wyatt said. "We probably saved the $2,000 two or three times and used the extra money to pay down debt to get a better mortgage."

in life is pleasure in work, pleasure in its result, and the knowledge of the value of the result to the community."
Albert Einstein Back to School Teaching Kids Money Management Skills Back to school time is the perfect time to teach your children about money management. School clothes and supplies cost money and the sooner children learn good financial management skills, the better off they will be. You can give your children a boost toward becoming good money managers by being a good money manager yourself and by taking the time to teach them what you have learned. What you should tell a child about money depends on his or her age and their ability to understand the information. Preschool is not too early to begin and lessons should continue all the way through high school. With today's computers and easy to use children's educational programs, teaching the basics can be an enjoyable experience for you as well as them. As good as many of these programs are, nothing beats real life experience. Giving a child an allowance helps them learn how to make spending decisions. It teaches them the benefits of saving money today to reach important goals later in life - like college.

Further, according to a recent Money Wi$e survey, 68 percent of Spanish-speaking individuals are not aware of any free resources available to help them manage their finances. To address this need, Consumer Action and Capital One are announcing the third phase of the Money Wi$e program entitled "Basic Banking," which will provide this community - as well as other immigrant populations - with multilingual brochures concerning the banking fundamentals they need. "Capital One partnered with Consumer Action to provide tools that will help the underserved communities understand how to better manage their finances." said Diana Don, Director of Financial Education at Capital One. "Opening a bank account provides a stepping stone to building a firm financial foundation and building good credit."

What's Amanda Barlowski got that they want? Her income and an 18-year-old's naivete.

Summer is a Good Time to Teach Children Money Management
Now that summer is here, many kids will have jobs or the chance to earn some extra money by doing odd jobs around the home or in the neighborhood. This can be a great time for parents to help them learn about managing their money.
When the cash starts rolling in from paychecks and allowances, encourage kids to pause before running to the stores to spend all their hard-earned cash, advised Debra Bartman, University of Illinois Extension consumer and family economics educator. Have them take time to plan how they want to save and spend their money.
"Without a plan, it's too easy for kids to spend on impulse for things they don't really need or want," Bartman said. "Teach your children how they can be in control of their money rather than letting their money get frittered away." Before they spend a dime, have kids pay themselves first by setting money aside for savings.
It is easier for kids to save money when they have specific goals. Have your kids draw or cut out a picture of the item(s) they want to buy. They could tape it to an envelope and list the cost of each item, and the amount of money they need to save each payday to buy the item. The money could be saved in the envelope.
Encourage teenagers to calculate how many hours they must work to buy the item they want. For example, if your teenager earns $5 an hour as take-home pay and wants to buy a CD for $15, it would take three hours of work to pay for that item. Then the teen can decide if it is worth the effort and money.

Send an E-Card IS YOUR TEEN READY FOR A CREDIT CARD? Finding the answer that's right for you by Cathy Ashby of 3 Should your teen carry a credit card? There's no one right answer. Most kids learn their money management skills from their parents. So, before deciding whether or not your teen should have access to plastic, you must first ask yourself how effectively you model money skills. If you are like most Americans, you're probably having some difficulty with credit cards. A recent study from the Federal Reserve indicates that 56 percent of American families carry a balance from month to month on a credit card. VISA surveyed credit card holders and found that their average outstanding debt was $2,209. Teens will probably follow our lead. If we model bad habits, we may be setting our children up for future financial difficulties. What we don't want to teach our kids is to rely on credit when they don't have cash.

60. Finances--What We Should Teach Our Children
just rewards of. He is a perfect Father. He is always ready to helpus teach money management and basic principles to our children.
http://www.hstreasures.com/ET/finances.html
Money and finances are usually not taught in schools. Parents seldom teach their children these subjects either. We must not only recognize but also teach our children that their daily decisions about money may effect the rest of their lives. Our children are taughteven if it is not communicated verballyby our actions. Our perspective, habits, and patterns of thinking regarding money will automatically be passed down to them. If your children are raised seeing you make purchases with credit cards, they will probably use credit cards and have more difficulty with debt than you do. (The consumer credit card debt of today is one reason that we should teach our children the value of increasing their financial IQ.) If we live paycheck to paycheck, more than likely so will our children. But if we save money, tithe and give abundantly, our children will probably have these same money habits. The Poor Man’s Mentality:
I can’t afford it.
It takes money to make money.
I am not interested in money.
