History of Mongolia Mongolia is a country with an ancient cultures an unique historical remains of all stages of human history in Central Asia. Early Beginnings …Stone Age to Bronze age Recent archeological discoveries have proved that Mongolia was inhabited 500.000 years ago. The first existence of human campsites, Paleolithic stone inscriptions and paintings, differentkinds of utensilmade of clay and other original things have beenfound Bayan-Hongor Aimag and other aimags. This is evidencethat this part of Central Asia was the heart of the ancientcivilization in the Paleolithic Era ('stone age') and there arewidespread archeological remains of the ensuing Mesolithic Era,Neolithic Era and Bronze Era. Empire of the Huns By 209 B.C, the early tribes of Huns set up the first example of the original state and classic society in Central Asia. The Huns domain stretched from Korea in the east to Lake Baikal in Siberia, until the empire collapsed in 98 A.D due to internal conflicts.  Rise and fall of Sumbe State The first state to emerge after the Huns was of the Sumbe

These specimens have enhanced our understanding of life in the Gobi region 80 million years ago, and they shed new light on the rise of modern bird and mammal groups. This exhibition showcases discoveries and research by Museum and Mongolian Academy of Sciences paleontologists over the last 10 years, and reflects the most current thinking on dinosaur traits, behavior, and evolutionary links to birds. Discoveries in China from just two years ago reveal that a number of dinosaur species had feathers; among the highlights of the exhibition are fully feathered models of

History
Archeological digs have uncovered human remains in the Gobi and other regions of Mongolia dating back nearly 500,000 years. Despite Mongolia's short summers, wheat growing has co-existed for thousands of years with nomadic herding, which the Mongols took up after they tamed horses, yaks and camels. The name 'Mongol' was first recorded by the Chinese during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). At that time Mongolia was dominated by a Turkic people called the Uighurs. The Uighurs were influenced by Christianity and, after taking control of Mongolia, went on to save the ailing Tang rulers of China from an internal revolt. The Uighurs controlled most of Mongolia until 840 AD, when they were defeated by the Kyrgyz, who now live in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The Mongols had little inclination to ally with other nomadic peoples of northern Asia. They remained little more than a loose confederation of rival clans until the late 12th century, when a 20 year old Mongol named Temujin emerged and managed to unite most of the Mongol tribes. In 1189 he was given the honorary name of Genghis Khan, meaning 'universal king'. The Genghis Khan imprinted in the memory of the west bears little relation to the Chinggis Khaan revered by Mongolians. Not only is the spelling different: to Europeans, the name epitomizes mercilessness and warmongering; to the Mongolians, it embodies strength, unity, law and order. Genghis set up his capital in present-day Kharkhorin, and launched his important cavalry - built on Mongolia's prized

The Mongol Khans and their Empire The Adventures of Ibn Battuta: A Muslim Traveller of the 14th Century by Ross E. Dunn
University of California Press, 1990; ISBN: 0520067436

This is not a translation of the writings of Ibn Battuta (an important primary source) but rather a good and highly readable synthesis of his 24 years of travel. While predominantly a vision of the many cultures of the Islamic world of the fourteenth century, Dunn also details Battuta's travels in the steppe lands of southern Russia and in Yuan dynasty China. Daily Life in China, on the Eve of the Mongol Invasion, 1250-1276 by Jacques Gernet

Country Info Mongolia Introduction Mongolia General Data Mongolia Maps Mongolia Culture ... Mongolia Time and Date Mongolia History Back to Top In the early 15th century, Mongol unity gave way to internal quarrels and dissension. Tibetan Buddhism gained ascendancy in the 16th century, and in 1650 the son of the Mongol khan of Urga (now Ulaanbaatar) was named a Living Buddha. An alliance of Buddhist theocracy and secular Mongol aristocracy ruled the country from 1696 until the 20th century, under the suzerainty of the Qing (Manchu) dynasty of China. The Mongols constitute one of the principal ethnographic divisions of Asian, or Oriental, peoples. Their traditional homeland is centred in Mongolia, a vast plateau in Central Asia now divided politically into an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China (Inner Mongolia) and Mongolia (Outer Mongolia), which lies at the eastern end of what was a great corridor of migration between Northeast China (Manchuria) and Hungary throughout history. It is unfortunate, because confusing, that 19th-century physical anthropologists introduced the terms Mongol and Mongolian as descriptive of racial type. The Mongols exhibit a wide range of physical characteristics and should be considered not as a race but as a group of peoples bound together by a common language and a common nomadic tradition.

Home About Us Search Back to Mongolia Mongolia's History and Background During the 15th century, Mongolia was torn apart with dissension and strife. With the rise of Tibetan Buddhism in the 16th century, a Living Buddha would be named. It was the son of the Mongol khan of Urga (Ulaanbaatar). Although the Qing Dynasty had dominion over Mongolia, the ruling groups of the country were the Buddhists and the Mongol aristocracy who were allies at this time. When Mongolia declared it's independence from China during the 1911 Chinese revolution, the Living Buddha still ruled. By 1920, a puppet government was established by a Russian general but the next year the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party began a government, with help from Russian Communists, that usurped the general and those who supported him. When the last Living Buddha died in 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic was established, but was not recognized by China until 1946. Due to Mongolia's alliance with Russia, when China separated itself from Russia, trade relations were greatly reduced between China and Mongolia. Russia's influence in Mongolia remained strong through the 1990's. In January 1992, a new constitution was instituted by Ponsalmaagiyn Ochirbat, Mongolia's president. In 1993, a new treaty was signed by Boris Yeltsin, Russia's president and Ochirbat, and that same year Ochirbat was reelected as president. With all the changes involved with reforming to a free-market system, the economy floundered. High inflation and unemployment caused President Ochirbat to lose the 1997 election to Natsaglin Bagabandi. Bagabandi had promised slower economic reforms and increased social services.

Mongolia is an ancient country. The history its statehood reaches back into the remote past. Recent archaeological findings show that the earlist traces of man's activity on the territory of Mongolia date from the lower paleolith ./ some 100,000-200,000 years ago/
At the beginning of the 13the century , a United Mongolian Empire was founded by Chinggis Khan. In 1691 Mongolia were subjugated by the Manchu Empire. More than 200 years later as the result of the Mongolian national movement for independence , the Mongol Monarchy was established in 1911. But China and Tsarist Russia didn't recognize Mongolian independence and in 1915 they insisted on the Mongolian authorities revoking the country's complete independence only allowing them limited rights as an autonomous state.
The people's revolution led by D.Sukhbaatar and his associates was won in 1921. Since then, July th of every year has been celebrated as the anniversary of the victory of the revolution.

History and Government
History:
Genghis Khan's grandson, Kublai Khan, became the first emperor of the Yuan dynasty in China in 1279. Mongol control of China lasted until 1367; from 1380 its possessions to the West were gradually reconquered and by the end of the 14th century the empire had disintegrated. Despite brief periods of resurgence under some of the great Khans (Altan, Dayan, Galdan) who forged temporary unity, the Mongol tribes generally reverted to their traditional fractiousness. Mongolia then became a regional pawn squeezed between the two rising superpowers on the Asian continent: Russia and China.
At the end of the 17th century, during which the Russians were preoccupied with developments in Europe, the Manchu dynasty in China took control of the whole of the historic Mongol territory, comprising what became known as Inner and Outer Mongolia. The former is now an autonomous region within the People's Republic of China; the latter became the independent state of Mongolia. Mongolian independence was achieved, with Russian support, in 1911 under the leadership of the so-called 'Living Buddha' Jebsten Damba Khutukhtu . China attempted to reassert its rule following the Russian Revolution of 1917 but was beaten back in 1921, this time with Soviet help. A short-lived restoration of the traditional feudal Buddhist monarchy was followed in 1924 by the declaration of a People's Republic, under the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP).

Mongolian Travels
ARE YOU BACK FROM THE FROZEN WASTELANDS YET?
This was the text of a message I received on my mobile phone from Tim Beale, one of my colleagues, as I switched it on in Frankfurt airport, following my flight homewards from China. It was supplemented by other colleague quotables when I arrived at work the following day, such as the note on my whiteboard:
Ghengis Cox, scourge of the Mongolian Steppes and questions such as:
Was it Siberia you went to, or Mongolia?
Why did you go there ? A number of people had called while I was away, to be told by my colleagues that I was on holiday:
"Oh? Where's he gone?"
"Outer Mongolia"
"No, come on, where's he REALLY gone?" I've had my connections and interests in Asia and particulary in Mongolia for a long time. My Mongolian interests come specifically through my friendship with John Gibbens with whom I shared a house during my final year at Leeds University in 1987/88. He has lived in Ulaan Baatar continuously now since 1991, with his Mongolian wife Altan Chimeg - Altaa for short - and their two children Inky(14) and Tekjer(2), although has been in and out of Mongolia having learned in the 1960s that Mongolia was one of the larger people groups to have no Bible translated into their language; he has spent many years working towards changing this. When you consider that it's necessary to understand the theology, and to know Greek, Hebrew and the native language, it becomes apparent that this is no small task.

http://www.fpmt.org/mongolia/history.html
The Rise and Fall of the Great Buddhist Culture of Mongolia Despite a long period of Soviet communist control this century, and the massacre of two generations of monks and scholars, Mongolia is now experiencing a revival of a spiritual way of life that had long defined its culture. Buddhism arrived in Mongolia in the third century B.C.E. with silk traders from India. It flourished for centuries until, in 1577 C.E., the Mongolian title Dalai ("Ocean of Wisdom") was bestowed on a visiting Tibetan lama, Sonam Gyatso, by the ruling King of Mongolia in 1577, thus creating the lineage of the Dalai Lamas of Tibet. By the twentieth century, after a peaceful communist revolution that should have brought independence, the country was caught in a political struggle with China, and sought sanctuary in Soviet military support. But by the 1930s, Mongolia was under complete Soviet control and suffered violent purges in every aspect of the culture. Over 60,000 monks, nuns and scholars were killed or incarcerated. All but three of the 700 monasteries were destroyed. Suppression under communist rule lasted over seventy years. However in 1989 Mongolia gained independence from Soviet domination and adopted a democratic government.
