Basic historical facts about Ukraine
Ukraine, the largest state in Europe, appeared on the map of the world in 1991. It was quickly recognized by the international community and more then 100 countries have established diplomatic relations with Ukraine. Although Ukraine has only been independent for seven years, it has an ancient history. The ancestors of Ukrainians began settling in the region during the Trypilian period several thousand years ago. In ancient times, present-day Ukraine was inhabited by the Anteans and the Ros', the ancestors of the Eastern Slavs. And it was here, in Ukraine, that one of the most powerful states of medieval Europe was founded in the 9th century. This was Kyivan-Rus', which included the cities of Kyiv, Novgorod, Chernihiv, Halych, Polotsk, Smolensk, Rostov, Suzdal and later Moscow, which was founded by the Kyivites a huge expanse of territory from the Baltic to the Black Sea and the Kuban River, and from Transcarpathia to the Volga. The famous Dnipro River trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks" ran through Kyiv, and the Zalizny route led to the Sea of Azov as well. This was a period of great power and glory. In 988 Prince Volodymyr introduced Christianity as the official state religion. The christening of Kyivan-Rus' took place in Kyiv on the banks of the Dnipro River.

Product Summary Warrior Women, by Jeannine Davis-Kimball with Mona Behan
Warrior Women Guide Rating - Pros Cons The Bottom Line - A two-pronged book that looks at the life of a modern archaeologist and at the heritage of ancient women who wielded power in their communities. Product Description After completing her education in her early fifties, Jeannine Davis-Kimball set out on the variously frightening, boring, difficult, and physically challenging, but exciting work of an archaeologist exploring areas of what was then the Soviet Union. After the fall of the Soviet Block, Kimball-Davis continued her excavation and discovery work in Communist China where the Caucasian mummies and textiles point to an early link with western Europe. Kimball-Davis was compelled to go beyond the accepted stories to unearth underlying, defiant truths. In one case, the ancient corpse she encountered had been beheaded recently. Because the body was obviously someone of power, and the head would have proven its gender, Kimball-Davis thinks the head may have been removed to preserve the illusion of male dominance in the region.

Nagorno-Karabagh (the historical name "Artsakh") occupies the eastern and the southeastern mountainous and foothills regions of the Caucasus Minor, composing the northeastern part of the Armenian plateau. It archly stretches from the mountains, surrounding from the east the basin of Lake Sevan, to the southeast, as far as the river Yeraskh (Araks). In different periods of the history primary sources called the land various names: Urtekhe-Urtekhini, Orkhistene, Artsakh, Tsavdek, Khachen, Karabagh. The first evidences of the ancient history of the land dates back to the Acheul period of the studying of the early palaeolith (500- 100 thousand years ago). These are the ancient tools and osteological materials, found in the caves of Vorvan-Azokh, Tsakhach, Unot, and Khoradzor. The maxilla of the Neanderthal man, discovered in Vorvan- Azokh, has a special significance for studying the anthropogenes process. The excavations of the settlements as well as burial places of the bronze and iron epochs (Stepanakert, Khodjaly, Krkjan, Amaras, Matagis, the valleys of Khachenaget and Ishkhanaget) evidence that the territory was the part of the area of the origin and functioning of the then Kuro-Arask culture, 4-3 millenium BC.

to see a larger slide image. Return to Rocketry Ever since humans first saw birds soar through the sky, they have wanted to fly. The ancient Greeks and Romans pictured many of their gods with winged feet, and imagined mythological winged animals. According to the legend of Daedalus and Icarus, the father and son escaped prison by attaching wings made of wax and feathers to their bodies. Unfortunately, Icarus flew too near the sun, and the heat caused the wax and feathers to melt. The feathers fell off, and Icarus plummeted to the sea. Daedalus landed safely in Sicily. Legendary characters used the power of mythology to fly through the heavens. About 100 BC a Greek inventor known as Hero of Alexandria came up with a new invention that depended more on the mechanical interaction of heat and water. He invented a rocket-like device called an aeolipile. It used steam for propulsion. Hero mounted a sphere on top of a water kettle. A fire below the kettle turned the water into steam, and the gas traveled through the pipes to the sphere. Two L-shaped tubes on opposite sides of the sphere allowed the gas to escape, and in doing so gave a thrust to the sphere that caused it to rotate. They sounded more like fireworks than rockets but the Chinese used rockets in battle.

The will to survive is inherent in all living creatures. From time immemorial, humans have had to fight to survive, and when we look honestly at the world today, circumstances have not changed to any great degree. One has only to pick up a newspaper or listen to a news bulletin on the radio or television to become aware of yet another atrocity of one sort or another. Although as individuals, generally speaking, we have no great control over the events that occur on a global scale, we can, to a certain degree, influence the destinies of our own lives. Therefore, to some it is a matter of great importance whether we allow ourselves, or our fellow human beings, to be robbed, attacked, mutilated, or even killed, without trying to do something to prevent this violation of our peaceful existence. It was probably this view which compelled the ancient masters of the Korean martial arts to devise sophisticated systems of self-protection. Moreover these systems were effused with a philosophical, ethical and spiritual framework that helped ensure they would not be used for retaliation, coercion or aggression. Great care was taken that these physical, mental and spiritual techniques were developed, controlled and transmitted from one generation to the next with almost military precision. This ensured that only those who were worthy might learn the secrets of the masters.

THE MONGOLS AND THE EMERGENCE OF MOSCOW
Kievan Rus' struggled on into the 13th century, but was decisively destroyed by the arrival of a new invaderthe Mongols. In 1237 Batu Khan, a grandson of Jenghiz Khan, launched an invasion into Kievan Rus' from his capital on the lower Volga (at present-day Kazan). Over the next three years the Mongols (or Tatars) destroyed all of the major cities of Kievan Rus' with the exceptions of Novgorod and Pskov. The regional princes were not deposed, but they were forced to send regular tribute to the Tatar state, which became known as the Empire of the Golden Horde. Invasions of Russia were attempted during this period from the west as well, first by the Swedes (1240) and then by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword (1242), a regional branch of the fearsome Teutonic Knights. In the best news of the era for Russia, both were decisively defeated by the great warrior Alexander Nevsky, a prince of Novgorod who earned his surname from his victory over the Swedes on the Neva River. Ivan the Terrible succeeded his father Vasily III as Grand Duke of Moscow in 1533 at the age of three. His mother served as regent until she too died, when Ivan was eight. For the next eight years, the young Grand Duke endured a series of regents chosen from among the boyars (the nobility). Finally in 1547, he adopted the title of tsar and set about crushing the power of the boyars, reorganizing the military, and preparing to smite the Tatars. In 1552 he conquered and sacked Kazan, and in 1556 Astrakhan, having thus destroyed the lingering power of the Golden Horde. Ivan's Tatar campaigns opened vast new areas for Russian expansion, and it was during his reign that the conquest and colonization of Siberia began.

It is always been said that the middle Yellow and Wei rivers valleys are the cradles of Chinese civilization. The beginning of which has been traced to Neolithic settlements around 5,000 B.C.
The earliest Dynasty, according to Chinese history records, is the Xia (c. 2205-1766BC). The founder of the dynasty is Da Yu (Yu the Great). He was made king because of his leadership in controlling the floods that afflicted the river valleys of China. Legend has it that Da Yu worked so hard on the flood project that he past through his own home many times without stopping by to meet his family.
So far, no archaeological evidence has been discovered in support of its existence. Many scholars still consider the Xia mythical.

INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF MONGOLIA
It would be no exaggeration to say that Mongolia is the only one of the ancient nomad states to retain the tenets of its original nomadic civilization, including the classic migration of livestock and closeness to nature. If you visit Mongolia you will feel the beauty of nature, where forest-covered mountain ranges and hills meet desert and steppe. You will also meet Mongols just like those who have been building traditional 'ger' since olden times, hospitable cattle-breeders breeding throughout four seasons traditional kinds of livestock (horse, camel, cow, sheep, goat), as well as the half-settled inhabitants of cities, who develop the industry and culture of the country. Specialists on the history of Mongolia from many countries have proved that it goes back over 2000 years. In 1991 Mongolia celebrated the anniversary of the establishment of the first Hun State in 209 BC. Mongolian archaeologists have discovered 500,000 year-old stone implements that are the remains of Mongolia's earliest inhabitants. Since the early primitive communal era, Mongols had lived independently in the neighborhood of such nomadic tribes as Turk and Khamnigan. In 209 BC, the Huns, who were by origin from ancient nomadic tribes such as Xianyu, Xianyung, Hun yi and Di, set up the first state in Central Asia. The Hun State was equal in power to the Chinese states of Tsin and Han. Khan, the sovereign of the State of Han Xiao Wendi wrote to Shan Yu of the Hun State in Laoshan: "in accordance with the decree of his Majesty, the state situated to the north of the Great Wall shall be governed by the decrees of Shan Yu, and the territory situated to the south of the Great Wall, peopled by those who wear tushmed belts and caps, shall be governed by me. Both the State of the Huns and the State of Han are powerful neighbor states".

    History of Korea
The Hermit Kingdom [ In the Beginning ] The migration of Neolithic nomads from central Asia and Siberia led to the gradual emergence of villages and small communities in Manchuria, China and Korea. Sedentary nomadic clans established agricultural settlements that later evolved into the first walled-town tribal states which set the mold for future social evolution on the Korean peninsula. Developments in China during the Warring States Period led to a buildup of tensions among China, Manchuria, and Korea's emerging tribal states.
[ Tales of Three Kingdoms ] Alliances among Korea's tribal states gave rise to the kingdoms of Puyo and Koguryo. China conquered the Liao-tung River basin and northern Korea to protect its northeastern frontier from the increasingly powerful northern steppe nomads. After the fall of the Chinese Wei Kingdom, Hsiung-nu nomads took control of northern China and the Liao-tung region. Manchurian Hsien-pei tribes destroyed the northern kingdom of Puyo and battled Koguryo for control of Liao-tung region. Refugees from Puyo later formed the southern Korean kingdom of Paekche. The Kingdom of Silla emerged as a major aristocratic power in southeastern Korea. The Japanese kingdom of Yamato emerged as diplomatic relations developed among Korea's Three Kingdoms and China.

Ancient Korean History Korean history is thought to have begun with the settlement of the peninsula by Tungusic tribes, who spoke a Ural-Altaic language, followed shamanic religion, and had a paleolithic culture, about 3000 . Tangun, a legendary figure, is said to have established the first Korean "kingdom" of Choson in 2333 . The introduction of bronze tools from China and the establishment of Chinese military colonies in Korea in 108 led to the sinicization of Korea and the rapid development of agriculture. Three Kingdoms Meanwhile, three loosely organized Korean tribal federations, which emerged in the 3d century , were transformed into kingdoms. The founding of the kingdoms of Silla in 57 , of Koguryo in 37 , and of Paekche in 18 (traditional dates) marked the beginning of the Three Kingdoms period in Korean history. Koguryo, initially based in southern Manchuria, expanded southward and in 313 overthrew Lolang (Lo-lang), the last Chinese stronghold in Korea. During this period, the influence of Confucianism, Daoism (Taoism), and other forms of Chinese culture increased in Korea. Buddhism also grew, particularly in Paekche and Silla. Silla expelled (562) the JapaneseÑwho had established a foothold on the coast in the 4th centuryÑand between 660 and 668 destroyed both Paekche and Koguryo with Chinese help. Having unified Korea, Silla became a highly centralized state in which Buddhism and the arts flourished.
