Battles are indicated by BOLDFACE type. All dates given are CE or BCE (Common Era or Before Common Era). Every effort has been made to assure the correctness of these dates, and to harmonize them with the current Gregorian calendar. If an event is listed under two dates, the LATER of the two is -probably- the correct Gregorian. Where any date in an Almanac-style source, or an encyclopaedia, has conflicted with a date given by a reputable historian, the historian has been taken as the authoritative source. Sometimes even the historians disagree, so I had to use my best judgement on the matter. Therefore there are no guarantees as to the exact correctness of all of the dates. If you have a better source, or a more accurate date, please let me know, but be so kind as to tell me * why * it is better or more accurate.

A Centre of Excellence In choosing to apply to Birmingham to study Ancient and Medieval History you are coming to an internationally recognised centre of excellence. In the three government-sponsored assessments of university research in England and Wales conducted in 1992, 1996 and 2001 we scored a five - the top mark. We take our teaching equally seriously: no-one doubts that teaching and research reinforce and complement one another. In the Higher Education Funding Council’s enquiry into teaching in universities in spring 1993, we received an ‘excellent’ rating. Few other places in the country can boast of such a record. A Wide Choice In studying Ancient and Medieval History you can draw on expertise in the Departments of Ancient History and Archaeology, Classics, Medieval History and the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies. The Degree in Ancient and Medieval History is jointly run by the Departments of Ancient History and Archaeology and Medieval History, so you are ideally situated to draw on all this expertise. We are not, of course, a supermarket, where you can pick and choose whatever you wish. We are very conscious that a true appreciation of History requires as broad an approach as possible. At some point during your stay here you have to do some cultural and intellectual history; you have to do broad themes and periods; and you also get down to the details of more specialised topics. But within the framework of the topics to which we direct you, you have a very wide choice.

compiled by NORA ROBINS, HISTORY LIBRARIAN Library Research Services
    University of Calgary
INTRODUCTION "A primary source is distinguished from a secondary by the fact that the former gives the words of the witness, or first recorder of an event. The historian, using a number of such primary sources, produces a secondary source". (Barzun, The Modern Historian , p. 94). A primary source is a work written at a time that is contemporary or nearly contemporary with the subject or period under study. Primary sources provide the raw data and information for the historian. A secondary source is a work that contains the explanation of, and judgements on, this primary material. A historical work is considered scholarly and reliable according to the extent to which it is based on "primary" sources, (i.e. the basic, raw, imperfect evidence). The book the historian writes is a "secondary" source. This bibliography is a selective list of primary sources in English, available in the University of Calgary Library. It is selective because these books represent a small portion of those available in the collection. The arrangement is by call number within each subject grouping To be used in conjunction with "Medieval Western Monasticism: Primary Sources in English in the University of Calgary Library."
